Need to replace the left rear brake light bulb. I assumed entry was
through the trunk. But after removing the bolts and cloth material I
don't see any way to access the bulb. Is there anything I need to do
on the outside of the car. I am a total idiot with these things.

If you cant access the lamp assembly from the inside of the trunk.  Try
looking at the lip of the trunk lid. That's how it is on my friend's
Corolla.  It should be a big screw, either a T25 Torx or a large Flathead
screw. Take off the screw(s) and pull back the whole assembly.

After you remove the fabric material, remove the nuts that hold the tail
light housing in place to access the bulb holders.

If you would like pictures, go to www.autozone.com, register your vehicle,
click on the vehicle repair guides link, then chassis electrical, then
lighting, then signal and marker lights link, then scroll down to the rear
light section.

I have a 96 corolla as well. Mine is DX but should be the same. What
you do is open the trunk. Then there are 2 black screws to the left
right next to the rear/back-up light area. Then remove the plastic
screws that hold the carpet. Then remove the bolt in the middle
inside. Then you need a screw driver and gently pry it out from the
left side near the left turn signal light area, should come right off.
You will see 4 different sockets, find the burned out one and replace
it. To put back, just do the opposite

May I suggest replacing all four bulbs?  If one has gone, can the
others be too far behind?
