SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) - Federal regulators on Wednesday
officially opened an investigation into the red-hot Toyota Prius,
responding to complaints alleging the cars' hybrid engine stalled in
traffic.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it received 33
reports of the gas-electric hybrid shutting down without warning
typically at speed between 35 mph and 65 mph. The investigation covers
about 75,000 vehicles.

Some of the complaints indicate that the vehicle was operated in
electric mode for awhile after the gas engine stalled, NHTSA said. In
at least half the cases, the car wouldn't restart and had to be towed.

Published reports detailing the potential problem first surfaced
earlier this month, but NHTSA, while looking into the complaints, had
yet to formalize an investigation until now.

There have been no reported cases of injuries.

The Toyota Prius currently dominates the competition, making up 64% of
the overall hybrid market in 2004. Prius sales tripled in April to
11,345, moving towards the company's target of 300,000 a year.

Toyota previously pegged its long range annual forecast at 1 million
hybrid vehicles.

Last month, Toyota announced one of its biggest ever recalls with
790,000 trucks and sport utility vehicles being called back to shops
due to problems with the front suspension. See full story.

U.S.-listed shares of Toyota Motor (TM: news, chart, profile) added 1%
to $72.44 in early trading.

Old news. The cause is a software problem and a fix is available.

Indeed.

Let's hope the fix works better than the endless stream from Microsoft. In
fact, before one spends umpteen thousands on a new vehicle, I think
manufacturers should be required to reveal consumer relevant details about
the software it contains. For example, I would not purchase any vehicle that
contains MS code.

Hey! FanJet here wants an "Open Source" Prius!!!!   ;)

OK, let's get started on porting Linux over to run on a Prius 2006!!!

Actually, where I used to work, most engine management software was
written using ADA. No Microsoft Required...

Duh!  I mean, who in their right mine would design a car that required you
to press a START button in order to Turn Off the car?    LOL

Th is a really old Mac thing. However, you do use the same key to operate
the same switch to start *and * stop your car.

Long ago I bought a 1984 Yugo.  I had to put a start button on it to
start it, since the ignition system was completely flummoxed.

I don't really care whether it's Open Source or not. My interest is in who
wrote the stuff and just as importantly, the libraries. I'd prefer that the
entire thing be done with pride, in assembler. I also think it makes sense
for common parts to be shared amongst care makers. For example, the TP,
Speedo, MAF, O2 loop has got to similar for everyone.

When the Prius stalled, did it have the "Blue Screen of death'?
