Hi we are looking a 4x4s for a new family car.The type we have in mind is 4
door - Frontera / Maverick diesel around the 3k mark.
What sort of things should we be looking out for models to steer clear off.
All seem to be a round 2.4 litre what sort of mpg would one expect to get?

Cheers

It depends on the use you wish to put it to.
How rough is the terrain you will be using it on?

Just general motoring we are just going for a 4x4 as have a large family
and may need to do some towing. The normal will be 70% run town
30% motorway.

If that was an actual prerequisite to owning a 4x4, it would make sense.

Steer clear of the Frontera or Maverick and you should be fine.

You can get a reasonable Discovery 200 Tdi diesel for about
3k now. Fuel consumption is about 30-35mpg generally (less
if you're towing). It'll tow 3 1/2 tonnes, and the 200Tdi is
a good engine. Gearbox troubles should be sorted by now.

Have you thought about a gassed Range Rover? RRs are very
cheap to buy now, and with a gas conversion, not expensive
to run.
