Gearbox is noisy in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th gears - 4th is ok - does not
go away in all the various 4wd modes - Gearbox is still silky smooth
selection wise - any ideas?

Although I can't help myself, the Pajero owner's club
(http://www.pocuk.com/) welcomes Shogun owners, so you could search for
info, or even ask yourself, on the club forum. BTW, the club is free to
join.

You must have a dodgy bearing in the gearbox. If it's anything like a
Trooper or Terrano gearbox there will be many sealed bearings in there. I
don't know if this is a 'good thing' but I suppose it must be if they choose
to build them in.

FWIW, I suspect that there is a noisy layshaft bearing and that 4th is
direct drive. However, that's only speculation - which is why I pointed the
OP at the owner's club!

The Haynes manual for the petrol versions gives little information and says
that DIY maintenance of the manual gearbox is a no-no.

Same goes for the diesel one as well!
