Hi everyone,
looking for some advice about a problem I am having with my 2.8
Trooper. Diesel turbo intercooled with 70k on the clock.Starts on key
first hit runs smooth and well through the auto box. The problem occurs
after a long drive of say over two or three hours. After stopping and
leaving overnight when I start up in the morning although the tooper
starts straight away I get hugh clouds of white smoke for about 10
seconds. It soon clears but this is driving me crazy.
On short runs no problems, no smoke whilst running either. If I restart
immediately after a long run the problem doesnt occur until the morning
after...any suggestions please!

Thanks,

Mac

Your starting aid, be it thermostart or glowplugs, are faulty. This is a
direct injection engine but still might have glowplugs to allow smoke free
starting. If it is only an intermittent problem then there could be a
control circuit problem, possibly a relay that is faulty.

Sound advice, will check the relays and heater plugs.

Check you're not losing coolant.
It may be coolant seeping into the cylinders when left overnight.
White smoke is usually water/steam.

No loss of coolant. Have checked out all the relays and QOS timer and
all ok. Have at last found out a direct short in one of the heater
plugs. No wonder the fusable link has blown! One question though, the
thermostat controlling the timer on the heater plugs swithes at a very
low temperature, nearly freezing. This is not what it says in the book,
it should be 56degrees. Hence my plugs very rarely come on at all. My
Trooper is a Japanese import, would they have a different thermostat
rating?

Thanks,

Mac
