i am on the lookout for a 4x4 i already have a 2.5 turbo diesel
mitsubishi pajero and am thiking of upgrading to a new model can anyone
tell me or recomend anyother 4x4s that are very reliable and robust
other than the pajero. it needs also to have 7 seats and be a work
horse as i travel frequently visiting my holiday home up the coast.i
have looked at numerous others i like the look of the isuzu bighorn the
isuzu trooper and the toyota landcruisers. they need to be diesel and
no more than 2.5 or 3 litres engine compacity.  any comments on this
subject are most welcome thanks from  smites.

If you don't mind something 'tank  like' the Nissan Patrol would meet
your spec. My brother in Law has one and it'd done over 200K miles
without anything major touching on the engine

Why diesel, and why 3 litres? I ask because diesel is more expensive than
petrol, which goes some way to offset the fewer mpg from petrol than
diesel. A petrol burner converted to LPG can be much cheaper to run than
a diesel - if you have enough LPG filling stations near you.

FWIW, the guy who runs the Pajero Owners Club (UK) also runs a Trooper
Owners Club and a Landcruiser Owners Club at http://www.itocuk.com/ and
http://www.tlocuk.com/ respectively and should give some insight on
owning these cars.

If seven seats is a must but "world-class" offroad capability isn't, you
might want to consider a 4WD MPV such as a Delica, Bongo, or Lucida.
These have more space inside than a conventional 7-seat 4x4, convert
nicely to impromptu sleeping accommodation (the Bongo auto-freetop has an
upstairs double bed!), and the Delica (at least) is almost as good off-
road as your Pajero.

Not really, large petrol engines last as long as diseasels. Most of the
belief that diesel engines last for ages is based on the experience of
trucks with normally aspirated engines and marine engines. However things
like the Gardiner diesels were built in a radically different way to modern
turbodiesel engines, being closer to Rolls Royce engines than to
mass-produced stuff.

As to vehicle type, you need to consider what your real (not the imagined)
use of your vehicle will be. I have a long drive down a difficult road to
get to my farm, and I rarely use four wheel drive to get along it, in fact
a Land Rover I had suffered from a broken freewheel hub so I never had 4x4
on it for the last three years of its life. It still managed to cover the
ground.

A soft roader or MPV type could well be what you want. In addition to those
listed by Geoff, I'd also recommend the Nissan Elgrand which actually has a
3.1TD engine. It comes in both 2WD and 4WD versions, and both have an off
road setting so be careful to check that the one you are interested in
really is 4x4. (on the 2x4 the off road setting simply adjusts the traction
control.)

I'm interested in one myself but currently waging a war with my wife who
hates the name and thinks that her friends would laugh at her if we had
one. I don't like the cloth seats, but they are standard on most vehicles.
The pop up roof looks good, the engine is IIRC the same as the one in the
Ford Ranger/Mazda B200 and the 4x4 transmission is off the same pickup I
think.

So it should be OK.

If you want one with a sink etc then I would have a look at some of the
aftermarket conversions. There's a fairly good kitchen unit in a box with
cokker, sink and fridge. It's custom designed for the Bongo and it can be
lifted out if you need the extra room. It's a much better design than the
factory fitted unit.

FWIW, the Ford Freda is the same vehicle - perhaps she wouldn't object so
much at that name!

Hmm no, sadly, we've been there. Although I think the Freda looks slightly
better. It's partly my own fault. The local importer is only 15 miles away,
so I took her there, warning here that the cars are generally shite and I
would buy elsewhere. I just wanted her to get an idea of the size,
equipment and trim levels. Leave it to me to get one in really good nick.

First comment: "I don't like this one."

"Why not."

"It's dirty and the dashboard is broken."

Once again, there is an owner's club:  http://www.bongofury.co.uk/ :)

However, two things to be aware of:
1. Unlike Mitsubishi with your Pajero, UK Mazda dealers won't support grey
imports (although some will service them). However, that isn't too big
an issue because there are lots of import specialists.

2. The fuel consumption is similar to your Pajero - after all, it's a heavy
beast with the aerodynamics of a housebrick.

That said, they're super comfortable and a nice relaxing drive.
