Gas-guzzling sports cars, 4x4s and people carriers could be priced off the
road within five years after a crackdown on carbon emissions to be announced
by the European Commission this month.

The average new car in 2012 will have to emit no more than 120 grams of
carbon per kilometre under proposals to be announced by Stavros Dimas, the
European Environment Commissioner. The rule change could add more than
£3,300 to the cost of a vehicle.

He said yesterday that they were needed because of the failure of European
car makers to keep to a voluntary agreement signed in 1998 to reduce
emissions by 25 per cent by 2008. They have managed 13 per cent and the
agreement ends next year.

That will be 95% of all cars on the road then eh?

So we will have a choice of 10 petrol cars and 24 diesel cars then?

If you have issues then I suggest you realise that all this Green Spin is

I think you will be pleasantly surprised to find that the solution is
actually just around the corner. The automotive industry is perhaps
the single most powerful sector in the industrial world. Even some of
the smaller firms are bigger than some smaller nations. When you get
up with the big boys they are real players on the global economic and
political scene and they are not just going to lie down.

Whilst the obvious answer to green personal transport is microcars,
and electric ones at that. (lets exclude bicycles as a real
alternative). No-one really ants to buy them - and the vehicle
manufacturers are building cars that have bigger and bigger wheels and
tyres, to accommodate bigger and bogger brake systems, needed for more
and more powerful engines, required by larger and safer cars, demanded
by the consumers around the world.

One solution to this, is for people to eat much less and so not have
the requirement for bigger cars. ( and if anyone thinks I'm joking I
have the statistics on my desk).

We will see real changes in lifestyle, perhaps. Personally my own
environmental master environmental criminals are the fashiopn trade,
the fashion groupies and such who dictate that the dining room table
we have with a flat top and four legs that served us well for a
millenia and more, needs updating on a five yearly basis. That we need
to constantly redesign and redecorate our homes, gardens, cars and
more just to keep in line with fashion. Come the revolution brother...
line them up against the wall.  :-)

Nah, best thing is that anyone who has a desk job should work from
home where feasible, not all of them can of course, but people like
call centre workers can work from home and so many other people.  It
works well (I do it) although you do have to watch out that you don't
go stir crazy!

agreed. I have cut my motoring from about 45-50,000 miles per annum to
around 8,000 by working from home.

I'm not really too worried about that one way or another.

My worry is that the 4*4 I'll be buying when I retire back to Wales will
become VERY highly taxed and the value drop like a stone - the value maybe
not such a great worry as I'll be driving it for 10years maybe unless
ofcourse fuel/tax will become so prohibitive that I have to sell it!

I expect the more grams above 120 the higher the penalty will be.
Basically it means 95% of 4x4s are f.cked.

I'm limited to about 3 cars on that list.
Due to the fact that when driving small cars I sometimes find my knees
dangerously trapped behind the steering wheel when trying to lift foot
from clutch pedal when there is a console at the side.

I need cars with room.
Grande Punto yes, Megane I would imagine so, Yaris possibly.
I know that small Vauxhalls, Pugs, and Citroens are out of the question.
They are difficult to even move round the corner, never mind safely
drive on the public road, due to the fact that the seat doesn't go low
enough or back far enough.
