Double-cab pickup that's fairly economic?

Wotcher all.

I currently have an old Defender and a 1997 Audi A4, neither get used
much so I was hoping to be able to combine the two of them into one
double-cab pickup type vehicle that has fairly decent miles per
gallon. All it needs is to have decent MPG, ideally over 40 in diesel,
automatic, be fairly comfortable and look reasonably smart as I'd be
going to client sites in it (I'm a computer techie).  No need for
off-road ability, I've got something else covering that.  Load area
doesn't need to be large, but needs a removable cover.  Price
something in the £5K-£7K range.

I've not bothered paying any attention to the car market for a long
time, and so don't even know what the names of half the cars are
these days, so if anyone's got a vehicle that matches the above
description then I'd be interested to hear about it.  I'm going to
start getting the car comics to see what's about these days too.

What a depressing window onto humanity that turned out to be.

Over 40mpg, double cab pick-up, automatic, smart and £5k to £7k.
You are having a laugh aren't you?
Maybe a 25mpg four year old one at that price. An old model leather clad
Mazda or Ford pre registered model may still be available for around £13k
plus VAT
A new super cab Ford should be around £12k+VAT  which will return 30mpg from
its common rail diesel but is effectively a cab and a half. All these are
manual transmissions. You may be able to find an used Nissan automatic at
around 12k+VAT if you are lucky.

If you are not VAT registered then I would not even consider such a beast.
Most used models will also be advertised +VAT.

Heh, just underestimating how good my landy and audi were doing!  I
get a little over 30MPG out of the landy and 47MPG out of the audi, it
seems most of the pickups are worse than the landy.  I'd hoped that
something more car-like than the landy might do the job.  Checking out
the car mags was a tad depressing, rather than cars getting better
they're just getting bigger and more daft looking.

I'll keep perusing the car comics, but there doesn't appear to be
anything that fits the bill, and I'm not prepared to spend money on a
car that's just going to be used for transport.

I'm curious as to what other uses you have for a car?

Coveting ;-)

For me, a car that's just going to be used for transport is something
that I'll not spend more than £5K on normally, and replace after 5
years, if I spend more than that then it's got to be a special machine
for more than just transport.  I've got an old dismantled Lotus in the
garage and a Pinzgauer 712M on the drive, they're not just transport,
they're toys.  Transport gets worn out and dumped, toys get looked
after.  My toys, totalled up, would buy me a new mid-range Jag but
what's the point in getting that?

Hmm. Finally someone sadder than me LOL.

How about coveting and loving and caressing the beautiful Jaguar. All that
leather and wood, yum. Best of all, you would get to use and enjoy its
seductiveness each time you wanted to go somewhere. Your could even nurse it
through thick and thin until you are an old man with failing eyesight and
needing your third set of artificial hips. Go on, spoil yourself.

No thanks, I prefer diesel, plus of course LPG tanks take up room and
I don't like the idea of a pressurised fuel that is constantly trying
to return to its natural state of a large cloud of explosive gas..

Not really into the moderns, maybe an older one, but I'd rather spend
the money on a pre-war Riley, that's if I could afford such a car!

Once it's covered in grease and scratches, doesn't look so good ;-)

None of my cars ever get cleaned in the usual sense, I'll spend a
weekend picking mud off the underside of the pinz or cleaning oil off
the lotus but the scratches and bird sh.t stains have been there for
years...  Occasionally I'll take a hose to them.

Yes and fret about whether it'll still be there when I get back, or
whether it'll have been scratched, or watch the paintwork slowly
deteriorate and the inside get shabby!  Naah, the audi is invisible,
just like transport should be..  Give me a juicy pinz and a sleek
little lotus any day!
