There are a lot more than two people in the States. Talk to a few more of
'em to get a better idea of what you are facing.
US specs will include lighting mods such as headlamps dipping to the right,
turn signals (they don't have amber indicators - the tail/brake lights flash
on/off rather than having a separate indicator unit like in the UK). Your
tyres may not meet US specs if they need a US equvalent of an 'E' mark to be
legal. You might need to fit a set of humongous bumpers. Different states
may have different regs, particularly on emissions - check what's needed in
the state where you're headed.

Have to ask the obvious question...why bother?
It's going to cost you around £750 + insurance each way, and if you are
going to be there for more than a year what will you do after that?
You will be driving a RHD vehicle in a LHD country
You may have trouble with servicing/spares
Insurance could be a problem
Hassle of getting it to US standards as mentioned by Simon H
Why not sell it here and buy a vehicle when you get there
Check out ebay.com (The US ebay) and do a search for, say, ford explorer,
(the bigest selling SUV in the world) plenty there for around $5000 ,that's
about £2600; plenty of freelanders too, for about the same price.

really really - don't do it.
sell it, buy something local an buy something when you return.
otherwisr you'll be throwing money away and will tie yourself up in red
tape.
but heh - your choice.

the original freelander was cr4p, take it as an opportunity to get rid of it
