Is it usual to get only 18,000 miles of the front tyres, I have a Grand
Vitara 2.0TD 3 door, year 2005. I thought with a larger diameter tyre they
would not wear out so quick. I remember when I had a mini which had small
dia tyres they soon wore out.

My Landrover Discovery has done over 25,000 miles on BFG AT's (10.5 x 31)
and I fully expect them to still be legal in another 25k.

My 2 ton '99 Ford explorer still has the original tyres at 46k(miles), and
will easily make 50k. Depends how you drive , I suppose.
The spark plugs are changed every 100k (In case you need to know that)

Something wrong here. On a vehicle which is default RWD I would expect
fairly even wear across all 4 tyres. I replaced all 4 on my GV at about
32,000 miles and they are all about equal in wear.
18,000 miles does not sound good, although I am not sure how much extra
weight the Diesel carries on the front wheels. Was the wear uneven? Have
you had the tracking checked?
Other than that I can only think that it could be your driving style.
Given that the front end is heavier, if you corner enthusiastically,
which the GV is good at!, this could be a contributory factor.

Sounds short to me. Most mini drivers (and ex mini drivers)
I know corner enthusiastically because they can! Check your
tracking too if the wear is on the inside or outside of the
tyre.
