I'm trying to figure out how to use my newly purchased (used) Tir-For winch. I'm stumped! The winch I have is red plastic sided, with the brand name 'Jockey', with 2 main levers poking out one side, and another smaller lever surrounding one of the main levers at one end. (Not the end where the tensioned cable is drawn in) Winching forward is OK, but how do I get the thing to reverse and release the cable in a controlled manner? (Or ANY manner!) You really should work these things out before you get stumped! Why didnt you ask the chap you bought it off? If no avail, take in into TJM or ARB and ask the guys behind the counter. If they are worth there salt they will show you and then when you have is sussed out they will sell you a snatch block and tree protector strap. The lever that has the smaller lever is the main activator (MA), it will have internal mechanical advantage and w.nking it backwards and forwards takes up the line in small increments. The small lever attached to this lever must be repositioned to reverse the mechanism. You have to have tension on the cable and must give the MA lever a quick jerk to get it started in its release mode...........all sounds very sexual but I assure you it's not. dj I don't think you quite understand his problem. He doesn't know how to set it up let alone start winching with it. Thanks chaps - Englebert got it right and I really don't need it set up as it is already so - it is hanging onto about half a ton of cast iron keel in my boat - I want to lower the keel but it isn't letting me! I know these winches are used for recovery hence my postings to the 4X4 world as well as the UK Sailing fraternity. Ah well, off to the sailing club I go this morning and sort things - many thanks! The small lever around the main wunching lever puls backwards and hooks on the casing to relase the cable completely so that it can be pulled throuigh the winch. [quoted text clipped - 15 lines] > > > > Adam H Jockey is one of Tirfor's models. AFAIK, you flip the small lever and pump the big one to wind in. You then flip the lever and pump the big one again to release the load in a controlled manner. The remaining lever should let it freewheel so you can pull a length of cable. Caveat: I only have a cheap winch, not a real tirfor. Alisdair |
