Then 'otherwise' to what?
I ask because my documentation says 16" alloys,

Yes, 235mm wide, 70% profile, radial on 16'' diameter rims with a load
rating. It might also have a wear rating somewhere.
This size sounds like a common one for Series11 Discovery. In my experience
it is certainly the best width of tyre to suit a Discovery for most
occasions. Wide enough to grip while not being too wide such that it just
spins uselessly on slippery mud and grass.

That you measure from below the rim on the inside, not from the widest
bit on the outside.

They came with the car (Terrano). I was browsing the net for winter
tyres and snow chains (being an optimist!) and it made me wonder about
what the measurements referred to, exactly.
Had fun yesterday driving through a couple of feet of water at a ford
near Rhuthin. And some nice steep muddy lanes too. But I've not done
much off road yet.

Yes the widest point where the tyre is in contact with the rim. The bead
width if you like.

You have a nice modern Terrano then. Mine has 215/75r15 on it. Steel ones.

Virgin had brand new imported ones (full UK spec) at £6000 below list
price earlier this year. No CD or sunroof - but they aren't worth six
grand.
Not bad at all - 3 years Nissan warranty, ABS, EBD, alloys, 4 eleccy
windows, air con, 7 seats, etc. I don't think there are any left at
that price.
