Both at the appropriate speed limits.
Beat that ;-)

I had a 1994 3.1td auto swb. Solo on trip around 25-26. Towing - measured from Scottish Highlands to Northampton sticking to speed limits - 15.5 mpg. Superbly stable, but just couldn't afford to keep filling it up, plus servicing was expensive. Sold and replaced with Vectra 2td which does a good job - 30mpg towing. Hope this helps Regards Ken

Unfortunately, the chap I was sharing the driving with managed to lose his way somewhere in France and take us around 100-150 miles out of the way while I was asleep.

Dave Liquorice - 09 Jun 2005 13:56 GMT > How does a Tdi or Td5 Dicovery do on journeys like these? Solo, I have nothing to tow, in a Td5 I get just over 25mpg tootleing about locally and nearly 30mpg on a longer run on motorways with the cruise set to just over 60mph.

Tony Penner - 10 Jun 2005 05:08 GMT I also had a 300 tdi, couldnt tell you what it did on long runs because it kept braking down, but it had cracking consumtion on the back of a AA Relay wagon!
Got a Volvo S80 D5 now 35 mpg Towing.

The D5 is quite quite amazingly economical (apart from when in the XC90) Mates 54 plate S60 chipped (195bhp and 400ft/lbs ) is averaging 46.1mpg, driven mainly fast A roads and occasional motorways.

Sounds about right - must admit to be thinking about the dark side for my next one - chipped diseasels are definitely challenging petrol motors these days. Still can't keep up with me though.

Ian Rawlings - 10 Jun 2005 15:09 GMT > Solo in my 300TDI i'm getting about ~28mpg doing mainly motorway/fast a > roads. In my 300TDi Defender with Fearns intercooler I seem to be getting MPG between 27-38! It's got a ragtop so lighter than the metal top, and it's a pickup so no trim or soundproofing. I've got the 38MPG figures marked down as "suspect" because it seems too high to me, but it's all done on the same spreadsheet as other cars I have and it's working out fine for them. I use the same methods to calculate mileage but 38MPG out of a 300TDi Defender does seem OTT...

> How does a Tdi or Td5 Dicovery do on journeys like these? I've kept records of all my fuel for a year now with my 200tdi Auto Rangey, and it's averaged just over 27.5mpg overall. Over half of that has been towing a car transporter trailer, weighing anything from 650kg (tare) to 2600kg (Bentley S1), and almost all the solo stuff has been pootling around town, though I've just completed two longish solo motorway trips at 60-70mph and got between 33 and 34mpg on them both. I also got so bored on these trips that I calibrated my speedo and odometer against the marker posts - the speedo was 2mph fast at 60, but the odometer was within 1%.
The other posts have confirmed how relatively poor the JapCraps' consumption is, though the annual cost difference disappears into the noise of total running cost once you include depreciation and repair/service costs.
