I saw white steam or smoke coming from under the bonnet just as I was
leaving the dual carriageway. This stopped, then the temperature gauge
started to rise toward and into the red. Before I came to a halt the
"Check Oil" warning light came on and the engine started sounding
uneven.

I checked the engine oil and water and both seemed to be at the
required level. The car has been  serviced regularly since 1998 but is
it possible that there is a blocked oil filter?. Can anyone please
tell me what the cause is likely to be. I Have someone who can
probably make an affordable repair but it will help if I can find the
cause first.

Regards,
Lila Duncan

A very hot engine can give very low oil pressure (the light comes on)  Your
symptoms sound like there is a cooling problem which has caused the engine
to overheat, coupled with the poor running my long distance diagnosis is the
head gasket has failed.  Sort the problem and change the oil and it will all
be OK !!

Thanks Mr Cheerful. I'll do a check based on your advice.
