I got pulled over today by dept of transport for one of those safety
check things and they pointed out something that i'd sort of been aware
of but hadn't realsied quite how bad it was.  With the car on the
ground if you grab either of the fron wheels at the 3 & 9 o clock
positions and wiggle it side to side there is quite a bit of play, also
if you jiggle the steering wheel you can hear a knocking sound before
the wheels actually move.

I'd though it was down to the anti roll link rods as the ball joints
were on their way out but i've now replaced these and the play is still
there in the wheels.

My first though was maybe the bushes in the wishbones have gone but
these don't look to be moving when the wheel is moved.

When i was pulled over they didn't seem to concerned about it and let
me go but now i know it's there i'd like it sorting.

Any ideas?

If the hub isn't moving along with the wheel then it's the bearing. If the
hub is moving side to side, then it could be the ball joint in the track rod
ends. If the wheel is moving but nothing else is - you need to tighten your
wheel nuts :)

The entire hub looks to be moving, brake discs and everything attached
to it.  The trackrod ball joints would possibly explain why the
tracking always seems to be a little out at least.

Will have a poke around with a screwdriver this weekend.

Thanks
