Pictures of a bog-standard Passat were enough to make me think "Well, that's
an interesting newsgroup, I think I'll keep away for a while". I still check
the group most days, but there's nothing much that keeps me amused here at
the mo.

Irritatingly for me I'm not even slightly interested in Jap stuff and that's
the only stuff that people seem to have modified recently.

V8 Puntos excluded, naturally.

I'm surprised you could see it, I mean, it's so fast, you'd never catch it

How about a good slap?

Mind you a colleague of mine just emailed me to ask if I think a diesel
Range Rover is a good idea...

Saab modified my 9-3 for me recently by welding the bulkhead back together
again. :)

I believe the 75 is still at the menders having the rust taken out.

Seems to have been a big job.

Is this the finest handling machine in the world.  Ever?

The one that would have been sold if somebody put an offer on for the soft

To be fair....

1. I told him I wasn't in a hurry, so he works on it between other jobs.

2. The rust was limited to the rear arches which were fixed way back in
December.

3. Alfa produced several different shades of 'fridge freezer white' and
he's had a couple of aborted attempts at matching everything. It's now
being fully repainted to ensure a proper match.

4. I'm in no hurry. I have I already mentioned that?

Apparently mine is looking 'stunning' - it was being MOT'd today and I'm
due to pick it up next weekend.

Just a shame some sensor on the 156 has throw a hissy fit this week,
meaning we're currently down to 1 car until we've had a diagnostics test
run on the 156 to get it through the MOT.

you can't use the word 'stunning' without an "ly" on the end followed by the
word "ugly" to describe a 75!
the phrase 'you can't polish a turd' does however spring to my mind when i
read this :)

That'll be the f.cking Kraut electrics, actually.

(Bosch supply the ECU and all the sensors. I've never had any problems
with Magnetti Spaghetti stuff).

I still don't understand why it fails, though - if you hold the revs at
2700-ish rpm, it flies through the emissions, but every so often it
drops them back to 2200rpm which flips out the MOT machine.

It's a c.nt of a thing to fix that doesn't in any way affect the
real-world emissions and road-worthyness of the car.

Next time she's getting a shite old 156 JTD, 'cos there's less to go
wrong and they don't rely on generic Bosch sensors / ECU.

"Ugly" in cars tends to be a good thing, it adds aggression and
character rather than a hairdresser feel, such as you get in cars
like... oh, I don't know, let's pick a random example out of the air for
no particular reason... an MR2 for instance.

*cough*

> the phrase 'you can't polish a turd' does however spring to my mind

Actually you can, you just need to wear thick gloves (Which also comes
in handy to help prevent you slashing your hands on the rust).

There are far worse looking cars than the Alfa Romeo 75 but that's not to
say it looks pretty.  "Wedge styling" right?  I can't imagine one looking
stunning other than under the banner of beauty is very much in the rose
coloured spectacles of the beholder.  Well I have rose coloured lenses and
they don't look charming to me.  The 75 looks as angular and dated as
anything else from the mid 80s.  It looks bloated - the 33 is prettier, the
75 looks like they were trying to make it look pretty and failed.  Shoot
even the 145 and 146 look prettier.

The 75 didn't change how cars look, there weren't enough of them about.  It
has to be a devestatingly blistering too-fast-for-nav-rallies tarmac
shredding machine to drive 'cos standing still it looks very dated.

Like it or hate it, Ford's "Edge" styling and Renault's "fat a.s" designs
are everywhere...

Ultimately, though, I'm just sharing my opinion of its looks.  All
subjective, I don't rate its appearance.

If SteveH were reading this there'd be something about it having perfect
weight balance and a class best chassis in favour of the 75.  I've never
read that other than from SteveH come to think of it.  Nor was it enough to
sell many and I very rarely see 'em around.  Indeed despite the last 33s
being galvanised, I rarely see these either...

I've just had a load of magazines delivered - dated from the late 80s.
They all sing the praises of the revised 75 range - ie. from when the
TSpark and 3lt V6 were introduced. As for 33s, how many H/J/K plate cars
are left on the roads of all makes? - not many - I reckon that
proportionately there are more 33s left than there are Astras / Escorts
of that era.

I wouldn't make too many comments about the 75 being ugly when you drive
a 206, though :-P

I think they're great, comparatively speaking. Obviously they're
extremely dated these days, but in the late 80's a bright red Twin Spark
was a fantastic looking car.

My mate had a brown, B reg 1.4 DL one at college.  We took it rallying to
Dalby Forest, then later on the propshaft broke doing a hard launch
(comparatively speaking) out of a junction heh.  So we decided to drink all
the beer we had in the boot whilst waiting 2 hours for the AA to come and
get us.  Good times.

Jap stuff isn't that bad. Ok the styling and interior is dull but I
couldn't find anything that offered similar power for the money. My
200sx has recently had a performance exhaust, filter and uprated pads.
It's soon to have a fmic and possibly an uprated clutch as mines
starting to slip and I'm not sure how long another standard one would
last.

It's approaching the end of the financial year so been busy at work, been
fitting a new kitchen at home, and the spare time has been spent sorting the
black BX out so it can go to it's new home.

Works starting to easing off for this week and next, kitchen is nearing
completion and BX has gone.  So now it's time to get the red BX back into
action.  The the Ovlov will be taken off the road to be transformed into the
ultimate handling RWD brick.  Maybe

Nothing much happening, whenever I suggest maybe an idea for an
"interesting" next car, but one that must be practical enough for a day
