Tim S Kemp - 23 May 2008 08:55 GMT or has Dan really gone and swapped a mid-engined, rear wheel drive, 6 cylinder hardcore french shopping trolley for a production line clio? Did you need the room for the shopping or the school run? Were you eager for us to take the piss at every opportunity?
What is the world coming to?

The ring and the island are occuring very soon :) As soon as I get the R27 from the dealership. See I wouldn't have enjoyed those half as much in the Vee because I could drive much more 'spiritedly' in the R27 as it's just so much more capable and confidence inspiring.

SportAuto did an 8:49 ring time in 2001 in a Vee. The only standard front drive cars with a faster recorded time are the Integra R at 8:43 and the Civic R at 8:47. Some MTM tuned VW thing got a lot quicker but had c. 300 bhp.

To be fair though, the ring is hugely about big power as there is so many long straight - and you'd be smacking the limiter in 6th at 141 in the 197. Whereas the Vee would give you a terrifying 155-160. Yes I know the top speed on paper is 150 but allegedly 155gps is easy...

Yea I am planning on doing such things too :-) I chopped the Vee because they're not actually that fun to drive, as the chassis is so edgey and knife-edge you daren't really push it, and when you do, it bites you. The R27 is so, so much more fun to hurl down a back road. Tiff Needell described it as "Close to hot hatch perfection" on the 5th gear review vs the Corsa VXR (available on YouTube for any doubters). I must admit though, it all seems a bit pointless after today heh.

Asked him if was any good, he grinned and said "It seems to glide across tarmac when you give it some, but it doesn't half f.cking handle, it's better cross country than that, and faster", and pointed to a new shape V8 M3 in one of his garages.
Seemed well impressed with it.
Until he said "But I really wanted a Focus ST, as that is faster again, but the Ford dealer was a tit".
Multi-multi millionaire, so he could have bought both, but he loved the Megane. I hope Dan likes his Clio as much, because this blokes grin didn't say "Shopping trolley" in the least.

In the latest Autocar, there is a 'drivers car of the year' awards, and the Megane was only 0.2seconds behind a Supercharged elise round some road bit of Millbrook. They are truely epic, about 4 seconds faster than the Focus ST round Bedford as well... The Clio handles almost as well - but just lacks a bit of the Meg's grunt. Although it's so much more fun to drive than the Vee, because it handles so well and the engine is so willing to be cained. It's strange how a lot of people here think they have the first clue about either as as far as I'm aware no one in here has driven either of them heh. Ok, I know that's the done thing in here, to take a personal bias as fact, but just choosing the Vee because it was RWD is very narrowminded, especially when you take into account the rep they have for such a dodgy chassis. The thing that made it so much fun was the pose value and almost supercar like way other people viewed it, but that got boring because, as PeteM understood, it was just crap at the B road blast.

And replaced them with heavy > tipos. I firmly beleive that if you all took the time, went out an test drove a Cup packed 197 - put aside your prejudices (sp?) and just gave them a good thrashing - there is NO ONE here that wouldn't get back to the dealership with a big daft grin on their faces having really enjoyed it - whether you'd admit it or not. The only thing I struggled with was not changing gear at 6krpm heh, but letting it wind right round to the shift light at 7,400ish - because the Vee was due a gear change at about 6,250.

I know what you're talking about though - Nat's 106, although lacking in power, is fantastic fun to throw about. In fact IIRC Clarkson (and Tiff I think) voted the 106 GTi the best car in the world ever, or something like that, due to it's go kart like handling. However I still prefer driving the SD1, even if it is slower round the corners (and potentially slower in a straight line too), just because it feels right. Powering off a roundabout with a massive V8 sound track and the back hanging out is brilliant, even if it's a little death-inducing in the wet. OK, the Vee is probably a little more scary than the SD1, but based on my extensive knowledge of both models I don't think I could have traded it in. I would have made Nat buy the R27 instead so I could play in both :D
But, horse for courses, and all that - you just have fun me lad!

Setup. All they need is the right setup and you drive them a bit like a 911, in late on the brakes to kill the understeer then shift the weight to the rear using a carefully modulated right foot.
As an everyday car they have mor big issues than Birmingham New Street but rear drive is what makes it worthwhile.

It's the same reason why me running a 911 3.3 Turbo from the mid to late 80s is a very bad idea indeed. If you brake in a corner, you get oversteer. Shoot if you lift off, you get oversteer. If you apply too much power, you get a delayed oversteery action. It's nice and stable as the turbochargers spool up of course. :)
All of the above assumes you were going in too hard or trying to come out too hard. And I don't see the point in buying a 911 if you're not going to try this some of the time.
Solution?
Boxster. Meh.

And the 911s, it was throwing down with rain, and wet grass on a tight track with 10 911s out was never going to be good, especially when entry speed into the first left after the main straight was 90mph....

I've still got the Capri and this winter, it's going to be prepped for some dragstrip action over the winter. Not decided what route to go with the engine yet though. I'd like to stay NA and at 2L although a YB turbo install isn't that complicated but it takes you into a different bracket where it gets silly expensive to be remotely competitive. Although I'm only going to be doing it for fun, I'd like to not look completely embarrassing.
As it's no longer my sole car, lairy cams and silly fuel consumption aren't the issue they once were.

Pintos are pretty crap as well and wear out fast when tuned. Turbos put you in a more expensive/competitive class.
That leaves nitrous for the strip. 100 extra is easily possible. And if you are careful you cant "see" it...

I'll fit a towbar. That's a mod, right?
