Squealing sound

Hi,

I've got a 2002 52-reg Corsa.  It's developed a squealing sound while
driving which only happens intermittently.

My first thought was that it was a braking problem - it's similar to the
sort of noise you might hear while applying the footbrake where there are
problems, but relatively quiet.  But when it's happening, applying the brake
gently actually stops the noise.  Sometimes, turning the wheel will change
the noise (quieter while turning right, slightly louder turning left).

Any ideas?

take off the front wheels and check the discs and pads

Yep sounds like something is sticking - a good clean and grease of the
braking components should clear it. Sometimes even a water hose on the
caliper is enough to clear the crap out.

Thanks for the feedback...

Is this something that needs to be dealt with ASAP?  The reason I ask is
that I'm not the most mechanically minded person in the world, and my car is
going in for service in 2 weeks anyway - I can ask them to take a look then.

If needs be, I'm quite happy to take the wheels off - just not 100% sure
what I'm looking for when I get there ;-)

I'm assuming that irregular wear on the pads would be a bad thing, likewise
with the discs.  However, I'm not completely sure what would constitute
'bad' wear on the discs/pads.

The car is still under warranty (providing it has done under 60,000 miles)
so take it into a dealer.

Ask them to investigate and quote of it is chargeable.

You may need new pads but probably just dirty?

Or it could be the lip on the edge of the discs

Either way, presumably something that the dealer can investigate properly
(and a whole lot better than I could, anyway!)

I'll ask them to take a look when I take my car in for servicing in a couple
of weeks, unless anyone thinks that this is more urgent than that.

Nah, doesn't sound urgent, couple of weeks won't hurt.

<disclaimer - if wheel comes off at 70 on motorway in the next 2 weeks, its
not my fault> ;)

Seriously, just sounds like crud in the brakes catching a bit.

lol :-)

I thought that it _might_ be the case (or something similarly noncritical),
and people here helped confirm that.  Anyway, all I'm likely to be doing in
the next couple of weeks is a relatively leisurely commute (7 miles each
way) to work!

Thanks to everyone again for their feedback - very helpful.
