Slipping clutch on automatic?

Hi all,
I've got a 1998 V6 Renault Espace Auto.

Over the weekend a warning light came on twice indicating an "ignition"
problem.  The owners manual says that this may also be related to the
auto-box.

I'm sure it's not just coincidence, but over the weekend the car has also
been slow pulling away from stationary - as if the clutch is slipping.  The
car also fails to hold position on an incline - it will roll backwards if
the brake isn't pressed.  Normally  on the same hill the cars holds itself
fine.

The local renault garage are booked up for the next 2 weeks, and have
suggested I go MILES away to the next nearest dealership.  Instead I intend
using my local mechanics I would normally use if something wasn't
"renault-computer" specific.

First, however, I'd like to learn a bit more about the problem:   Do the
symptoms I've described above make sense?  Is is possible for an auto box to
slip like this?  Is it a symptom of something obvious?  Does it sound
renault-specific for which my local garage may not have the necessary
diagnostics?

Thanks in advance,
Ian

Is it reasonable to assume that you've first done the obvious and checked
the fluid level? I'm not familiar with the espace but the warning light
thing may be an overheating warning.

Yes, it would be reasonable to assume I've done the obvious, and no I
haven't done it.  I'll do it as soon as I get home - hopefully it's a simple
as you describe...

Cheers,
Ian

Usually autoboxes need to be checked hot with the engine running and
having sloshed the gear stick end to end a couple of times.

Yup.

A worn or faulty clutch in the auto.

Auto gearbox repairs are specialised jobs usually - even a main agent
would normally just fit a new or exchange box.

Yes, because they're crap at anything other than regular servicing.  If you
can find a decent auto box specialist you'll save a fortune.

Honest John in the Telegraph always raves about King Automatics, 'The Chalk
Pit', College Road, Epsom, Surrey KT17 4JA, tel: 01372 728769.  Near me, but
very probably not near the OP.

Must be something in the air round Epsom. Didn't John Dodd, who built
that famous RR special, have an auto repair business there?
