First car was a Citroen AX 1.1

Then Pug 106 1.1

Now I own a Ford Escort 1.6 16v P reg (96,000 miles). And it's getting
ratty. I want to look for the next car, but what?

Main features are:

* Power steering
* Central locking
* Eleccy windows
* 5 doors

What would be the next best car? I don't want go back to smaller car as I
got used to a 5 doors car.

I did think about the next model of Ford Escort, but I want to see what's
available out there.

Willing to spend up to £1,000 plus the price of whatever my car will be
worth when part exchanging.

Thanks all.

Don't judge a book by its mini-series.

For a £1000 you'll end up with another ratty car I'm afraid.

Yeah I know, but it's better than keeping taking my car to the garage many
times to fix it.

All of my previous cars had 2 years of life with me before moving on to the
next one.

Dont waiste your money.

If your only after 2 years life out of a car. then you shouldn't be
paying more than £250, and even then it should have 12 months MOT

And no, I ain't dreaming, I used to buy vehicle to that spec and
it's far more cost effective than the new motor I'm running today.

Aint that the truth Jeez if you do drive a big bristol (no pun intended) its

Stuff the powered gubbins, you don't need it and it'll only break. Don't get
a ford escort, they rust and break Have a shufti at Mondeos and Primeras. I
would have bought a prim if I could find a good one, but instead bought a
Mondeo. You get all the powered guff you list and they're dirt cheap. Try
not to buy one that drinks oil at a terrific rate. Or from someone with a
sloping drive who doesn't understand about the car being on the flat when
the oil's checked...

I did consider Mondeo but it's a bit bigger than the Escort and with my
small driveway, I'd have problems with parking the Mondeo! :)

Perhaps the same size as Escort would be good.

Thanks for the reply.

In that price range, sell privately - you'll get sod all on a part exchange,
and probably end up with a new car that's much the same.

A quick look at Auto Trader for Escort-sized cars doesn't really provide
much inspiration! Meganes have something of a notoriety and anything French
and under a couple of grand could easily turn out to be an expensive,
unreliable POS (cue loads of 'I've had a Citroen Baguette 1.4 Garlic for
years and it's never let me down' type replies). Having said that, a Peugeot
306 (especially the diesel) might fit the bill. An Almera or a Corolla will
probably be reliable but about as exciting as doing the washing up. Mazda
323 or one of VW's non-German offerings perhaps? Looks like 1500 quid could
get you a decent-ish Ibiza or Felicia (stop giggling at the back).

Consider ZX/Xsara - they're the same as (or similar to) the 306 underneath,
but cheaper.
