SWMBO is hankering after an MX5. I doubt that the new model will have
any impact on used prices at the c. 5k end of the market, but
conventional wisdom says that you don't buy convertibles in the Summer.

Any idea what the price differential is? I think it's unlikely that
she'll wait, but I'd like some idea of how much better prices would be
in, say, December.

That would be about an 'R' reg, first of the previous model then.
'What car?' price guide for Feb 2005 puts says they were then worth 500
quid more than they are showing now on www.whatcar.com. A car which is
one year younger would cost about 700 pounds more. So it doesn't seem
worth worrying about. Also consider Elise and MGF, but you know that;
much harder to guess what the F prices are going to do.

Thanks Nick.

She's recently qualified, it's a replacement for the AX I bought her to
practice in. The insurance for the MX5, even the 1.8, is surprisingly
reasonable, but I think an Elise would be pushing it a bit.

Elise: it will break down.

MGF:  It will break down and you won't be able to get the parts.

So it's not the 1.8 engine that will cause the breakdowns ?

Get in touch with Carl Gibbs on uk.rec.cars.modifications - he's got a
tidy black one for sale under £5k

Cheers for the plug fishman!!

The price differential doesnt seem to be that much btween summer and
winter - a few hundred quid maybe.

Ours is a 1995 1.8i S in black with 74000 miles.  It's in good nick and has
been well looked after, plus comes with a hardtop for the winter!  Its up
for £4200.  If you're interested drop me an email.  Oh, we're in Southampton
by the way

Cheers Carl. That would have been ideal, unfortunately, she's been doing
sums, and her budget has now increased somewhat, so she's now looking at
02/52 models... Not that I mind, of course, so long as I get a go
occasionally.

What's the deal with the 1.8i S model? I get the impression that earlier
versions came with a limited slip diff, is that still the case or is it
just a trim level?

Yep it has a TorSen type diff, i think earlier ones had a proper LSD but it
turned out to be a weak point, failing quite early in life so was phased
out.  It also has the soft suspension, like you'd find in most models, but
its still very good handling.
