SOR - 28 Jul 2005 17:41 GMT www.sparesorrepair.co.uk (buy or sell mot failures , spares , or cars with a mot)
I dont need the webspace or the bandwidth or anything - just sick of the sight of it and it needs a good bit of the php code rewritten .
It wasnt a complete loss though as I learnt some basic php skills in getting the adverts working .
Would keep it going if I thought there was any chance of people starting to use it but lets be honest and say that just isnt going to happen without spending the money to promote it .
Sniff :-)

Such a shame :-(
It can be hard to make people aware of a website. Unfortunately I haven't had any need to trade cars or car parts. I have a website, but just just seems to sit there not doing anything (and it's also pretty rubbish anyway).
fishman - 29 Jul 2005 09:54 GMT Don't give up, try www.cardellmedia.co.uk www.yourbusinesssuccess.co.uk and www.planetearthradio.com plenty of advice for promoting your business on there, including the website.
I think Chris Cardell is great!

fishman - 29 Jul 2005 16:04 GMT >i think he is a spammer Nope, I was offering genuine advice google me and you'll find I post loads on the uk.rec.cars.* mainly the one ending in .modifications
My friend swears by the Cardell stuff and I'm impressed with a lot of it that I've seen too, though I can't put it into practice as I don't have my own business.
I think it's worthwhile recommending it when I think it'd help.

Promotion only gets people to look at your website. But if they then don't like what they see, they're not going to use it and probably not going to return. So whilst spending effort promoting it is sensible, you have to make sure that the site no longer looks like a dog's dinner when they get there.
It seemed to work well enough though, implying that your skills lie more with PHP and HTML than Photoshop and of course your English.

I have to say that after putting my car on there for sale (now sold and deposit paid but not yet collected...) I was all set to offer helpful advice on layout, typos etc.
Then I saw how you responded to somebody else doing that, and I thought 'Oh well....'
Take help from anyone who offers it. Life is too short and hard to try and do it all on your own...

Very few of your visitors will be web experts either. They'll get the same vibe from a site that anyone would. Besides, you don't have to run a website to understand websites and know a good one from a crap one.

Is your definition of a crap website one that looks bad .

Technically, sure. However, functionally it was dodgy and presentation wise it was ugly and looked unprofessional. It looked like a little demo project and that it wasn't worth using because it looked like the webmaster had got bored and was unlikely to maintain it. And lo and behold, that's the situation.

You may as well tell me what you think of my latest effort .
AstraVanMan - 31 Jul 2005 20:59 GMT >> >You said yourself it worked ok . >> [quoted text clipped - 7 lines] > > You may as well tell me what you think of my latest effort . I think you should make it clear exactly what makes your site different from the others, like tinyurl and makeashorterlink.

TMK the only real difference is most of the other websites dont ask or they auto redirect you after 5-10 seconds or whatever .
Dont know about anybody else but I almost never click on a tiny url etc unless I know and trust the user because of the auto redirect and the fact it could take you anywhere .
AstraVanMan - 31 Jul 2005 21:47 GMT >> > www.vhit.co.uk >> > [quoted text clipped - 12 lines] > unless I know and trust the user because of the auto redirect and the > fact it could take you anywhere . I'm not convinced on this. The vast majority of uses of redirection services like TinyURL (which is to URL redirection like Hoover is to vaccuum cleaner) are used by people sending links to friends and acquaintances either by email or on newsgroups. I suppose you might have a point - an unknown poster may come along with a TinyURL, which could be spam or a virus, or could be something useful, so it could well be worth it.
But my point was that, IMHO, you didn't make it very clear that that was what made the service you offer, different from the others.

Each to their own - although I was only thinking of newsgroups .

R. Murphy - 29 Jul 2005 19:45 GMT Not sure why you are advertising online cannabis sales?

Grimly Curmudgeon - 30 Jul 2005 01:27 GMT We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold. I remember "R. Murphy" <newspam@murphy9100.fsnet.co.uk> saying something like:
