Tax and these new logbook thingies...

Just realised that my vehicle tax/excise/duty/twat tax or whatever they
call it these days is due at the end of the month.

I've also just realised that I haven't got one of these new V5C
logbooks...

Will I still be able to get tax using my old V5 logbook, or am I going
to have to fk around getting a new one first (in which case no doubt I'm
probably going to incur an automatic untaxed vehicle penalty trigger as
it will more than likely take weeks to arrive) ?

You don't need your V5 to get your tax disc, just your Certificate of Motor
Insurance and MOT (if you car is old enough to require one).

You do if you haven't got the reminder form - which I haven't got, so
I'll be using a V10...

According to section A of the V10 tho, in the bit that states what
documents you need, it says;

    "Registration Document (V5 or V5C)"

So I might be alright.

ah, I did eventually find my reminder form before I got my disc this
morning.   You could always try it.  Nothing to lose I suppose.

When you renew your tax or declare sorn they send you a new log book.
Make sure you tell the staff at the post office that you haven't got a
new one.

The new log book is more important for selling or scraping the car.

I thought they had all been done by end June.   From June 1st 2004 for
any vehicle that hadn't got a V5C, taxing or declaring sorn for it was
supposed to result in a new V5C being sent out automatically.  You
must have used some dozy post office to tax it, that didn't key it in
right to get them to send you the new V5C, or the system was down or
something.

They called up the log books for all the vehicles that haven't had tax
or sorn onin the last year them last month, I've got the new V5C log
books back for the 4 I sent in at the end of June.

The why change bit is not 100% accurate.  The main driver for change
is that they have 1,000,000's of cars on the system but don't collect
tax on half of them.  It caused much gnashing of teeth and wailing at
the treasury that they didn't collect tax on every registered vehicle.
Most have been scrapped and broken up but not declared so they want to
wipe the slate and start with a set of vehicles that they do collect
tax on or at least have proof that they exist somewhere.
