New to this group so bear with me if this is an old question:

Colleague is selling his daughter's Vauxhall Astra Merit 1.7D (K plate
120K miles) and wants £470 for it.  (she's off to college and will not
need a car).

FWIW she is only it's second owner.

I would use it initially only for commuting as purely in terms of fuel
economy it would pay for itself - it costs me £50 a week in petrol for a
250 mile commute

What should I look for or what would make me run away from it?

In the longer term it would also offer a vehicle that my nice can
practice her driving in next year when she is 17.

TIA

The price for a start. About £150 too much.

Seems like a lot for a 12-13 year old poverty spec Astra. A quick look at
Autotrader shows a few 1995-97 models for under 500 quid, including a
smattering of turbo diesels.

Look for a more aesthetic and interesting car    :o)

To be fair, it'll probably be very economical and cheap to repair, if a
little slow (someone will be along shortly with values for 'a little').
Should be immaculate with loads of service history to fetch anywhere near
the asking price though.

The only appeal seems to be that, as all vehicles at this end of their
life are about £400 which seems to be a figure plucked from the air with
the intention of persuading the punter that the vehicle is actually
worth more than a trip to the scrapper and are thus all equally
worthless, this partcular bit of worthless junk is being sold by someone
I share a desk with and will thus, albeit be under no obligation to do
anything in response, have to listen to me moaning about the pup he has
foisted upon me.

In other words could I do worse (or better)?

Remember it's to be used for only 250 comuting miles per week.
