I know there are a lot of companies about who can supply personalised
number plates as long as they are of a certain format e.g. B4OWN or
B4OWNmr etc but where can you get tha chance to obtain the more
expensive private number plates such as ROB or STEVE etc which follow
no strict formats. note: I am using the above as examples as I am
aware that the last 2 would cost a fortune.
The only place I can see are the dvla auctions but if they are not
there how do I go about finding the number I am after?

There are a whole load of companies / agencies who will help you part with a
whole load your hard cash in exchange for 2 pointless pieces of plastic.

They dont exist.
All number plates conform to one of the uk's previous standards.

AB12 CDE (always two numbers , 5 letters)

A123 BCD ( 1 to 3 digits , 4 letters)

ABC123 D (1 to 3 digits , 4 letters)

ABC 123 (1 to 3 digits , 3 letters)

AB 1234  (1 to 3 digits , 1 or two letters)

Closest you'd get to steve is S7EVE or possible STE11E with sloping 1s
Not sure how you'd get anything to spell rob. Possibly RO13

Plates that correctly spell words tend only to come up at auction rather
than in the usual bargain basement listings in car magazines.

STEVE would never have been issued. You might see for example STE11E where
someone has (illegally) been a bit creative with the angles of the 1s and/or
employed a black fixing screw in the appropriate place.

Anyone ever seen the one I want? HAM15H - please let me know! I once saw
DAN15H (could be Danish embassy?) and the Spanish Ambassador's is SPA1N.

The cleverest I ever saw was C41NEG, although its owner probably didn't have
a clue. You'd need to be in the photographic/photo minilab trade (which I
was at the time) to understand it, though...

Someone at work has M15ORY, so I thought maybe M15ERY was available.
Apparently it is on a Silver BMW convertible. Damn, I could have made a
few quid to Stephen King fans.

C4RL R is on an Audio S6 Quattro, so I aint getting that one. Apparently
C900 plates don't exist, so I couldn't find C900 CAB or C900 TBO for the

In the late '40s early '50s, a garage called University Motors who were MG
dealers in Epsom booked most if not all the 'UMG nnn' series. If you go to
a classic car show you'll still see quite a few around.

I'm sure that I also once saw a Range Rover being driven at considerable

The only place I see a use for them is with 'classic' cars, where you don't
particularly want to advertise exactly how old it is. But then any old

How about PR1CK? That would fit most of the knobs I see on the road (and
sometimes under it).

I was under the impression that if not already registered, you could suggest
it to them and they would sell it at the next auction. I may have dreamt
this, though.

You can't. For whatever crazy reason the DVLA insists you have at least one
number and one letter in each registration.

Many years ago, Glasgow wanted G 1 for their new town car. But the owner
wouldn't sell. So they, being the licensing authority at that time, issued
themselves G 0.

I believe this is because of the channel island plates.
Jersey plates begin with J which is why its difficult to get personal plates
with J in them even at DVLA auction. We had to get a Jxxx XXX type plate as
the onl available at the time for someone.
Guernsey plates apparently have ony digits so there are actually "1" "2" "3"
etc still in circulation.
Maybe someone from the island could comment?
I heard it explained on a radio program after someone had commented they had
seen a car with the plate "4" in London.

Prices at auction are rocketing.
I was looking for one like xx X and they have have double din price in the
past two years. Still cheaper than from a dealer but not by much.

I bought a plate that added 10% to the cost of my car.
If I bought that plate to day it would add 50 to 70% to the price of the car
(at its new price today).

10% was thinkable but 50% is unthinkable IMO.

My son baught an MG Metro a few years ago, for £600 with the reg'n in the
format ABC 123. Which he kept when he sold it for £375. It's been on a Uno,
Nova, Cavalier, and is now on his '99 323 BMW. The reg'n number is reckoned
to be worth around £800, so he'd still be in pocket if he sold it.

So would I, but not by as much as someone I knew who had S plus one number.
The number had belonged to the family since it was originally issued.
One of the Banks had seen it round town and left a letter under her
windscreen wiper one day.
She got enough for the car to buy a flat.
This was a long time ago, before the DVLA started auctioning off plates.
