I'm looking to buy an older car from France. The ones I'm looking at
tend to be 1973 models. I know that the exemption from UK road tax
applies to cars manufactured prior to 1/1/73. Is there any way to fiddle
this when registering the car in the UK?
I don't know what documentation I have to produce but I was wondering if
I could claim that the car was manufactured in 1972 but first registered
in 1973. Anyone had any experience with this sort of thing?

You'll need proof showing when the car was manufactured.

I know some of the imports I've owned have had "Decl'd manuf in 1984" for
example, so if you can fiddle it you'll be sorted.
alternatively, and I know this might be a long shot, try buying a 1972 car?

I know that some fiddles can be done. A mate had his 73 Mk1 Escort
re-shelled and he managed to convince the DVLA that the new shell was
from a 72 car.

I haven't decided exactly what I want yet. Its a Citroen DS that I'm
after and the last ones, mainly 73/74 had the more powerful, less
stressed 2.3 injection engine. Having said that, I actually prefer the
look of the older models with the pre-facelift frog eye headlamps and
I've just seen a nice 1965 ID19. Although its not strictly a DS, most
folks wouldn't actually know the difference. Obviously a 1965 car would
be ideal from a tax POV.

No need to fiddle. If it was manufactured pre-1/1/73, then it'll be
"Historic" tax class when you register it.
You'll get an age-related plate anyway - relevant to the original date of
first registration, according to the carte grise. Do NOT send Swansea the
originals - you won't get 'em back - and anyway you only got a photocopy
from the vendor, remember?

Yes. You need to get proof of the date of manufacture. The normal UK
importer will often provide this, or the relevant UK club.
What is it, btw?
