Untaxed cars & letters / fines from the DVLA

I think it was at the start of '03 when the DVLA started their
advertising campaign where they stressed that they had all the
addresses of all the registered keepers of vehicles that were not
taxed / declared SORN on their computer, and that they'd be sending
out fines etc....

Has anybody received such a fine? Or know of anybody that has?

I had a car stolen mid '02 that was totally trashed, impounded, and
later crunched. Long story, but basically it was retrieved by the
council as an untaxed vehicle left in a dangerous condition on a
public road. No official record was ever made of the destruction of
the vehicle as far as the DVLA were concerned though, in fact no
record was made at all by anybody it seems!

Anyway, I phoned the DVLA, told them all the above, and they confirmed
that as far as they were concerned the vehicle still existed, and that
I should put what I had told them down in writing etc. and send it to
them. I never got round to it though, and checking on the page at:
http://www.rac.co.uk/web/carbuying/vehicle_data_search
the vehicle still exists!

I'm wondering how long it will take before the computer decides to
send me a fine, or if in fact it ever will? It seems from recent posts
here that I'm not the only one to not receive promised fines...

I got a fine for not declaring SORN on my old Golf Cabrio.

A little creative use of a photocopier sorted things, though ;-)

That page is always months out of date, so I wouldn't take it as conclusive
proof that your old car's still registered.

Indeed.
Neither of my cars is showing and they are both more than six months old.

Heh, it seems to not know about my car, which is thoroughly taxed and that.

I just went to that page for the first time and checked out HOR 821X, which
I scrapped in May 2003 (I just checked my records). And yes I did send off
the V5 correctly filled in. All it says is last change of owner 1995, does
that meant they think it's still around?

I received a fine and demand for back tax earlier this year, this was for a
car that I part exchanged back in September '04. The slip on the bottom of
the V5 had been completed and returned to DVLA but it appears that they
didn't receive it. I replied enclosing a copy of the sales invoice with
details of the p/x on and they sent back a letter saying no further action
will be taken.

So in answer to your question; yes.
