Hi,

I am looking to buy a 97 escort estate. It is an auto box with 52k on the
clock. No history but all MOTs.

I test drove it and it seemed fine except when I stopped and had foot on
brake, it wanted to pull and the revs kept dropping and picking up. I know
they use a belt system for the auto box, is this a trait of that?

Anything I should look out for?

Cheers

Yes. Something other than a '97 auto Escort.

Oh, and I'm a long term Ford fan BTW....

Another car.

These days, Ford make excellent cars, with one exception - the autboxes are
crap.

Unfortunately, Escorts were designed before 'these days', and are also crap.

So, an Escort with an Autbox?

No.

Yes, A Ford with the CVT 'box. Dont walk, RUN!!!!!

They are awful, and the only reliable thing about it, is that it will be
unreliable. Ford actually stopped production of the CVT varient for about 6
months at one point whilst it worked out the problems, which in the end were
slightly less than in the beginning.

Grabbing at idle, refusal to go backwards, refusal to go either way, general
strange goings on, and constant stalling are par for the course.

Likeiwse the Metro K series CVT which used the Rover-ised Ford 'box did
exactly the same.

Dreadful!.

Mate of mine who does 'backstreet' repairs on cars couldn't find a working
secondhand box anywhere.

Estate. Auto. 8 years old-ish. Gotta be the V word (the one that rhymes
with olvo)    :o)
