Still... support for belts............... But
There`s a lot of snapping and financial suffering going on ......
So why not embrace the availability of chains, now alongside the belt
drive models often at no extra cost to the customer , even on small
*cheap* new cars? And why do some here defend cambelts over chains?
Can it be the *Stockholm Syndrome* ............ Held *hostage* by the
belt drive job on the drive.....
Can it be better for the psyche ( re potential horrific costs) to
believe belts are really better than chains despite significant
objective evidence against this?
( for a little evidence try a Google search of *groups*. I had 12,400
hits for "cambelt failure".
Try this.....(for a cure) Visualise the honda tv advert for clean
diesels...
How does it go ( hum it ) the engines are flying over the
fields........
( but its about belts & chains now not clean Honda`s:) the old engines
fly past ( carry on humming) one snaps its cambelt and smashes its
valves, head, and drops into the field smoking. Another has a waterpump
whip the cambelt off and there is a smashing of valves and pistons, the
third old engine soars over the field and and "snap" ......
The field is covered in bits of cambelt, piles of broken valves, ruined
heads and pistons....
common rail injectors where the broken valves have been driven up ito
them...
Then the new engine flies past..... its a new camchain design and its
chain runs in an oil bath of mobil 1........
Does this still not seem better engineering and safer for the wallet?
Hey! This is an attempt at humour ! there is no offence intended to
anyone :)
(and some of my cars are still on belts)

Well that's because there's a lot written about it, and a lot of people
don't even know what a cambelt is, let alone that you're supposed to get it
changed. I've just googled "timing chain" failure and it returned 58,900
results.
Though "timing chain failure" only gives 1120 results, so you win :-)

Personally, I think you're obsessed with common rail injectors! I'm no
expert, but AFAIK valves generally just bend - injectors are connected to
relatively thin injector pipes, and the valves would have to smash into
millions of tiny little pieces for them to get driven up into the injectors.
The only thing that makes commonrail injectors/high pressure pumps expensive
is the cost of replacing them, which is often due to age (around 150-200k
ish) or possibly due to moisture, as a result of condensation gathering due
to the fuel filter not being changed often enough.

Well I reckon, just to cope with all situations, this advert of yours should
have a chain driven engine that's been mechanically neglected, because it
was bought by some pikey due to its cheaper overall running costs, and the
chain tensioner has failed because it's driven by oil pressure, and the
oil's well overdue a change, with pistons whacking into valves as a result!
:-)

Hello again :)
Yes, quite right.
I wish I had written it all up from the alternative perspective now
advocating not buying chains... (LOL)

There's a lot to be said for horses. Free garden fertiliser for one thing.
No timing chain or belt for another. And it keeps your lawn down. A win-win
situation not dependant on Arabs.
