No, it's not a bargain.
Three and a bit grand for a 9yo E36 318...? Are you a f.cking comedian, or just stuck in a time warp?
Oh, and you're illiterate, too.

Definitely not a comedian as I haven't said anything funny since I started paying for x-wife off.
I like the oldies, but I like the convience of modern cars.
Adrian - 26 Mar 2007 21:21 GMT > Hang on there pal its not my auction just one I came across while > searching ebay for a reasonable priced bmw (see other post) OK, my misunderstanding. It just looked like spammage.
This bit still stands, though...

My repose is as it stands :)
Just wondering what kind of BMW 4k can get me. I have been driving vw polo's and 1.4 golfs and well quite frankly I want don't need want :) something with a bit more BHP, sporty looks, nice interior, just something a tad more classy. Although the cabin build on vw's is superb just fancy a nice change.
Adrian - 26 Mar 2007 21:58 GMT > quite frankly I want don't need want :) something with a bit more BHP, > sporty looks, nice interior, just something a tad more classy. Don't buy an E36, then, whatever you do.
I had two 318s, drove a couple of 320s and borrowed a 328 a few times "back in the day" - all 2yo at most, all dealer maintained co.cars.
They were all sh.t - uncomfortable, not that well built, evil-handling - but the 318s were also terminally underpowered.

In fairness, isn't the 318is a much better engine (140 or so bhp) than the regular 318?
Don't know if that auction is a 318is, but the url gave a clue it might be...

In the E30 318iS there was a rather good little 16v lump and yes, it was around 140 bhp.
The E36 318 wasn't far down on power, IIRC, but unfortunately the E36 was the beginning of BMWs downfall when it comes to fun to drive, well built cars..

The 318 was seriously underpowered. The 318is was better. Seems you've had a bad experience with the E36 but I would say they are generally considered far superior to the E30s.

No, they're not.
The E36 was the beginning of the end for BMW build quality.

You'll end up with an E36 which will be a horrible pile of shite. Build quality is a fair way behind what you get from VAG products of a similar era - my brother had an E36 which fell apart around him and a former colleague bought an E46 from the company - last time I spoke to him he said 'Ultimate driving machine - my arse'.

I've hard a lot like this of people not being too happy with E36's (on bmw forums).
Been with VAG for a good while and love it, not a lot goes wrong hey just keep rolling, never fail to start. Worst I have had is failing window regulators other than that just usual wear and tear.
I've also been peeking into sabbs although I never thought I would look at them but they are slowly becoming more and more interesting. So far I've seen some 9-3's I like and they are sensible money too. What do you think ?

Well, yes, I would recommend a *good* 156 bought from a recognised brand specialist.
However, in his position, I'd go with VAG every time.
I'm sure a Passat W8 wouldn't stretch the budget too much these days ;-)

[quoted text clipped - 5 lines] > Out of curiosity how are is the alpha 156 to run ? mpg, reliability, build > enjoyment to drive ? MPG - the wife does about 10k miles / year (15 miles each way to work and back plus some longer stuff) and gets around 28-32mpg. Not bad, really.
Ours has never let us down in 2 years, but has had a couple of niggly faults - a corroded air-con pipe and some hassle getting a steady idle for the MOT this year. Other than that it has been just about the most reliable thing we've owned.
Build quality isn't quite up to VAG standards, but it's ahead of the crap punted out by Ford / Vauxhall / Peugeot etc. Nicely styled and comfortable interior, too.
BTW, it's ALFA, with an 'F'.....
> Never known to much about them, they quite nice looking cars, Itlian I > believe ? Erm, yes. Obviously.
> You seem to have a like of them be interested to know you thoughts :) I love ours and would have had a 156 diesel as my company car if I'd had a choice. But the choices were German, German or German, unless you wanted a base model Mondeo or Vectra. I chose the mid-range Passat option. I like the Passat, too - it's great for business purposes, but I'd pick the 156 to drive for private use.

Mpg is OK, reliability ranges from 'great' to 'daren't turn the key'.
I cannot imagine anything being more enjoyable to drive.

To be fair, we paid quite a hefty premium to get a fully warrantied one with huge amounts of history from a couple of North London specialists in order to get a good one.
We did, however, look at all kinds of shite during the 3 month mission to find one I thought was worth buying.

I wasted a vectra 2.5 GSI (same engine) in a 21 year old 900 turbo...

My E36 325i coupe was probably the best car I've ever owned. Good looks (at the time) reasonable amount of room and practical with the folding rear seats. Great handling. The lesser engined or non sport spec'd models aren't so hot. The problem with E36's now is that they're dated but not yet "classic" like the (inferior) E30s.
£4k would buy an E30 or E36, E34, E38 and probably an E39 so yes, take your pick.
