My car radio has stopped working but the CD player is ok?

As described really, the car radio stopped working , came back
briefly, and then stopped completely. When I say stopped working , I
mean it switches on and the pre-tuned stations are still there but no
sound. However the CD player works fine.

It's one that came with the car , a ford focus, it's a 6000
'something' e-o-n .

Any suggestions, sounds like some loose connection if it came back
briefly?

No..nothign to do with loose connections. Sounds like the pre-amp
is/has failed.

Plenty of them on Ebay cheap enough.

what exactly is a pre-amp, how much roughly do they cost and what does
replacing one involve? Is it a job for a mechanic?

An internal part of the radio.

You wouldn't be able to buy one for a Ford radio.

> Is it a job for a mechanic?

No.

I don't suppose the aerial's been nicked, has it?

Same happened to my 4000 (radio/cassette). Threw it out, got a mounting kit
for a standard radio/CD unit from Halfords (cheaper on the web if you look)
and fitted a normal size unit which you can spend as little or as much as
you want on.

The pre-amp is part of the main circuit board inside the radio and not
replacable unless you know a fair bit about electronics. You can take
it to a car audio specialist and they can repair it but it works out
cheaper to get one off Ebay.

If I bought one exactly the same off Ebay, is it easy to fit ?

Yeah..use the removal tool to take it out, swap the connections over
and push new one back in.

Sorry Conor, but what do you mean 'removal tool'?
I bought the car secondhand and don't remember getting any tools!
I noticed there were 4 small holes on the face, is it just held in
place by screws?

Of course the other way, if you are cheap, is to bend a wire coat
hanger into roughly the same shape as shown here so it will go into
the holes and use that instead.  I could not garante it will fit your
car, but when I had to do it it was exactly the right size.

IIRC the real tools have a bit of a barb at the end, to help you pull
the radio out.  I did not find it hard to get a grip on the radio and
pull when the latches are realeased by the tool.  If you are lazy (as
I am) you may be able to get away with one tool, and realese one side
at a time.

That tends to work better for conventional DIN-sized radios; the OP's
double-height Ford one would be harder to do without the proper tool.

I wouldn't have thought it's the pre-amp as it's stated that the cd
still works, more than likely the changeover from radio to cd either
way it's buggered as it's probably cheaper to replace than repair but
check with Ford as the stereo may still be under warranty.

it's an '02 reg so unlikely to be under warranty
