This one is for real folks .
A think tank has come to the conclusion that motorway traffic needs to
be spread out over the full 24 hour day to ease congestion .
As trucks take up large amounts of motorway space - removing them from
daytime traffic could only speed up and improve motorway traffic flow .
Therefore , Trucks will be banned from motorways during the daytime and
will only be allowed to use a motorway between the hours of 9pm - 7am .
New state run storage and distribution centers will be built next to
motorway slip roads in every major town and city - so trucks dont need
to pass though any towns .
Each state run storage and distribution center will have a fleet of
electric powered transit box van sized vehicles to take and deliver the
goods to the local shops .
Yeah sure yesterday i was just joking ..... but i swear everything i've
said above today is for real .

How do they do that? They only take up the same space as two cars and
there's only 450,000 in the entire UK.

Congestion is deliberately caused by traffic calming measures, too few roads
and
badly sequenced traffic lights.
How thick were the people who come to the conclusion of 24hours!
All they have done is said in 12 hours 300 vehicles use a section of road,
so let's have 300 in 24hours. None of them must be drivers. Increase the
speed limits so that traffic can travel faster and you will have a higher
thoughput.

Unfortunately it wouldn't. You would need to remove people who drive too
slow, people who get a car given to them but can't control it due to some
impairment, older people who don't know what day it is and stupid people
who see a car broken down and slow to 30mph to have a good look.

That means they will all want paying more and it will push the transport
costs
up even further, which will cause prices in shops to rise. I know they do
anyway
to keep shareholders happy, but this will cause a lot of harm.

And who will be paying for them? Existing companies will not pay unless
they
can pass on the costs. Why not go back to using trains? Far cheaper than a
truck driver and you can get more in!

Umm, think you'll find one of the UK's larger courier companies has just
bought a fleet of electric trucks. Think it's TNT... Mind you, my milk
was delivered for *years* on an electric vehicle.

I think you'll find it'll be on local letter delivery, not county wide
deliveries.

Of course you're right, it's not for the trunk deliveries but they
reckon it's ideal for the collections and drops to clients in a
metropolitan area so it's not just for the local letter delivery either.
They reckon they'll be using them for in city deliveries up to 8 hours
at a time and recharging overnight. ISTR it was DHL but I can't find the
link or info on the radio 4 website so I can't say for definite. Was
only in the last fortnight though.

Our local milk delivery company abandoned theirs in favour of diesel as
recently as four or five years ago, I wouldn't be surprised that in the
light of recent events they may now be beginning to wonder if it was a such
a wise decision.

If you were ever actually out of your w.nking Chariot at 3 a.m. then you
would see that there as many trucks on the roads then as there are at 3 p.m.
Many trucks couldn't operate at night since the people who load and unload
them don't work at night.

Well the supermarkets are open 24 hours. Shelves are filled overnight
so that's when the goods are needed.
Maybe schools should run 2 shifts to prepare the kids for life on the
night shift. Then they really could close down half the schools and
sell the land.

And they're also getting stuff delivered to them throughout the daytime
as well.
But what about all the other companies who aren't on 24hr warehouse
operations?

Yes, I'd like to see the manager of the Travis Perkins branch at Abergavenny
