Hi

When obtaining an insurance quote online you are asked to state any
modifications from the manufacturers standard specifications.  I
always took this to mean anything added since the car was new.  Is
this correct?

I ask because I've been looking at second hand Mini Coopers and all of
them are modified to some extent due to the huge options list.  If the
original owner specified 19" wheels instead of the standard 18" ones
is this a change from standard specification and if so do you have to
list everything such as heated front screen, upgraded stereo etc?

Cheers.

They're all manufacturers options so don't need to be listed.

It matters when you fit aftermarket stuff, not so much radios etc, but
if you had the suspension lowered etc then that's an idea to mention...

Not true.  Even factory-fitted options could affect the risk - this is for
the insurer to decide.  (Especially body-kits & larger wheels)

Indeed, but the golden rule is always to declare and let the insurer decide
the risk on the facts.

I have never had an insurer check my vehicle for factory fitted options,
no matter what they've been. Never known one too, other than in
apocryphal tales on Usenet - never seen actual proof of any issues with
factory fitted bits either, or indeed of dealer fit stuff.

No doubt you can point me at some.

'None that I know of..."

Is a car buyer required to check every part of  used car he bought?
