This is nonsense advice isn't it?
Manager(?) at snow chain supplier "you cannot fit snowchains on these
"large" sports wheels because they might foul the bodywork".
So I checked..
Freelanders have these wheels:-
R16 215/75
R17 235/65
R18 235/65
R19 235/60 or 235/55 (two designs of wheel)
OK, the R16s are not as "fat" (215) but LR say you can fit chains on
all but the R19s. So its not the fatness causing fouling the
suspension. It would have to be the diameter, which are all the same?*
The real reason is of course that the R19s do not leave enough rubber
in the side profile of the tyre to avoid the chains damaging the alloy
wheels, hence you can only use (LR say) those snow "slipper" fabric
thingies (but not accepted in all jurisictions as legally required
chains).
*
when I used this size calculator I got different overall sizes
"http://www.tyresave.co.uk/tyresize.html"
surely thats wrong? All the Freelanders will have the same diameter
tyres, otherwise the gearing would be all over the place. It certainly
looks that way in the brochure.
My solution is to get the alloy wheel freindly chains for the R18
wheels, danger:- damaging the alloys where the chains come nearer the
alloy, danger accepted. (its unlikely I will need to use them much at
all as i will be on the edge of the snow season, if I do I will go S L
O W L Y.
Any errors in above logic please?

The R18s you mention above will have a 1" larger diameter than the R17s
with those tyres as the '65' means the height will be 65% of the width, this
will be 153mm in both cases. You can work out the others.

The error is the tosser trying to fit low-profile tyres to an
off-roader, even if it's a soft roader.
