... that even if I was a millionaire I wouldn't spend obscene amounts of
money on cars. Rolls Royces, Veyrons, Bentleys... not interested.  But that
new Ferrari 458 Italia... I'm like a schoolboy playing Top Trumps and
finding I have the Countach *and* the De Tomaso Pantera. By christ that's
truly lovely, the first "proper looking" Ferrari for ages, and when I'm
blessed with a squillion pounds I'm having one.

Oh, and pre-empting the inevitable "I don't like it", "It's too...", "It
looks like a...", I don't give a f.ck; you're wrong, I'm right: it's lovely,
end of, goodnight!

Same here. I'd like a TVR Griffith 500 and some very practical, but very
fast people carrier for the kids,  but that's about it. Hardly an obscene
amount for either of those.

That is *gorgeous*. It's so much nicer than any modern Ferrari IMO. If I
win the lottery a few times, I'd have one!

Something like an XJR or an S class AMG is what I'd like when I've got some
cash. There's something fantastic about big cars with big engines, the
driving experience is almost surreal IMO. And something that weighs very
little with a big engine for when I want to buzz around...

If I won the lottery, there's absolutely no question what I'd buy (though
it's rather unlikely, as I've never bought a ticket). An F40 or 288 GTO
would be top of my list.

Buying a lottery ticket does not increase your odds of winning much, they go
from zero to negligible. :-)

Zackly.  And you win a quid each week, guaranteed.

Indeed, I've not been playing every week since it started and now I'm over
£750 up.

I once had the pleasure of being  driven in a Merc 560SEL back in 1995
by a Greek Chauffeur in a hurry. Surreal, as you say, that something
so large moved so quickly.

I was going to say I'd like something less highly strung, but I can't,
cos I want a TVR. I'm not that bothered about handling. Scary fast and
power is my thing :)

I'm always confused by the millionaires who have their own chauffeurs
if I had that much money I'd set myself up with a nice ferrari, but th
pleasure would be in driving it, not having someone else doing it fo
me, does anyone agree

Well, in this case,it was a foreign company that I worked for the rich
guys weren't fit to drive the cars! It was all kept in the family. The
two old men who set it up the company in the 50s were cousins. They
married each others sisters. This had been going on for generations. The
results weren't the most intelligent beings to walk the earth. Very, very
rich, nice chaps, slightly older than me but I was good friends with one
of them via my boss (who was also related, but distantly so actually OK)
There is no way on earth the son could have driven a car with his nervous
ticks and twitches or his deficiencies. They had a fleet of Mercs with
chaffeurs and a couple of Ferraris.

I drove a Hornby Hobbies manager home once, in a company car, and he
remarked how odd it was that it was a treat for him to be driven home and
also a treat for me to get out of doing my job to drive him home! He was
right so I suppose it's to do with what you use a car for and how much of a
petrol head you are in the first place.

It's a battle you can't win. Someone else will always turn up with
something faster and more powerful. Far better, IMO, to go for something
that's fun and rewarding to drive and arrive with a grin on your face.
That Ferrari will cost twenty or thirty times as much as an old Mini,
but I very much doubt if it'll be twenty or thirty times as much fun.

*Slightly* prettier though.

I'd happily pay a man to get me up and down the motorway in a nice car, and
then drive something interesting for myself when I wanted to. When you've
got a lot of travelling to do, driving just becomes a chore, and a
considerable portion of your day is spent doing it. Or to put it another
way, if you live an hour from the office, you could work be out of the house
for 12 hours, spending 2 travelling and 10 in the office, or be driven, and
spend 10 hours out of the house, but be working for the entirety. Same
amount of work gets done, but you get 2 hours back out of your day.

The worse your handling, the more 'scary' fast becomes. :-)

Or, put another way, the worse your handling, the less fast "scary"
becomes....

My stepdad had a Chimera for ages. I drove it a few times. Hilariously
fast. It was the sort of car you buried the throttle into the carpet,
clenched your arse cheeks, hung on and laughed like a maniac.

If it was wet, clenching didn't help.

I want a Griffith 500 :-)

I suppose, if you forced me ;-)

"Twin exhaust pipes you say? This has got three" - I hope this isn't the
start of another new trend.
