Going to the UK in a week, and splurged for the anywhere rail pass.
Any car museums in the UK I should hit? I saw one in Coventry, but was
wondering if there are any other ones I should check out.
Also, what are good places to take random pics of Triumphs in the wild? I'd
love to get a pic of a RHD Spitfire, an original Mini, etc even if I can't
sit in one.

When are you coming, give us dates and where you're going to be and I'll see
what's on. There are various club meetings going on all the time and you
might like to turn up to one, should see the odd Triumph there. Also,
there's an all Triumph evening at the Ace Cafe, not sure how well attended
it is but I can find out for you.
If you're near Coventry take a look at www.canleyclassics.com and you can
see the Maccau Spitfire aloing with a few others at a free museum - be
warned though it's not on any public transport route :-)

You'll be thinking of Gaydon.
http://www.heritage.org.uk/
Quite impressive, if you like British tin. I found it a bit samey.
The other main one is Beaulieu, on the south coast.

Never been, to my eternal shame, so I can't really comment....

I presume by "in the wild" you mean out and about? You've got a very good
chance anywhere reasonably scenic on a sunny weekend. Otherwise, get hold
of a copy of Practical Classics magazine and ring up a few of the
specialist dealers and/or clubs, maybe get along to a pub night.
If you get to a pub meet or dealer, you may even get offered a go in a
right hooker, even if it is just around the car park.

Good collection but never my favourite museum, something a bit cold about
it.
Cheers,

Also the National Motorcycle Museum next to the NEC in Birmingham...

This was gutted by fire last year and many exhibits were destroyed. I
don't know if it has reopened yet.

I'd forgotten about that!

You should visit the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu in the New Forest
(train to Brockenhurst), and also the Haynes Museum at Sparkford (train
to Castle Carey). The line to Yeovil Pen Mill goes right past the museum
but there isn't a station at Sparkford.
Then there's the Heritage Motor Museum at Gaydon, Warwickshire, which
has a vast collection of mainly British Leyland and predecessors' stuff
although it's now owned by Ford. No stations nearby but Leamington Spa
is the nearest.
If you're interested in Formula 1 then have a look at Tom Wheatcroft's
collection at Donington Park which is awkward to get to by rail but is
about equidistant from Long Eaton (Derby-Nottingham) and Loughborough.
It's near the airport formerly known as East Midlands.
Brooklands Museum (Weybridge) has a fascinating collection of both
motoring and aeronautical exhibits, and you can see the club house
and what remains of the famous banked circuit. They are currently
raising money to bring Concorde C-BBDG to the museum from Filton.
Brooklands was the birthplace of motor racing in Britain and was a
major aircraft manufacturing site during World War 2 and into the 60s.
There's also a good museum at Birmingham and of course the Science
Museum in London (South Kensington) has some motoring exhibits. The
Jaguar Museum at the Brown's Lane site in Coventry is small but well
worth seeing. Check if it's open before you go because some of the
smaller collections may only be available for prearranged visits or at
limited times. This certainly applies to Vauxhall's museum at Luton.

There's a big Mini show at Sandown Park (Esher) this weekend that
you'll probably miss, but you should catch the International Mini Show
and Spares Bonanaza at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire on April 11th. It's
near Kenilworth between Leamington Spa and Coventry. There'll certainly
be plenty of early Minis that I'm sure the owners will be happy to let you
sit in. If you get onto one of the Mini lists you'll probably be able
to fix yourself up with a lift from Coventry.
Sorry, I can't be much help on Triumphs! Gaydon has special marque days
throughout the year but I don't know when the Triumph one is. Minis are
in October.

Not to mention Duxford - Absolutely superb. http://www.iwm.org.uk/duxford/
TBH, Brooklands is not that great as a museum - it's fun for a wander if
you're there for a club event, but not massively worth a visit on it's own,
IMHO. Duxford's far better. Not many cars, but the Land Warfare hangar at
the far end is fun, especially if they're exercising something in the
dustbowl/mudpit next to it. (I've driven a Lohr FL-500 round that - great
fun!)

Most of the Science Museums cars, buses etc have now moved to Wroughton
Airfield near Swindon. But they are only open certain times and its all housed
in aircraft hangers. If you do go on an open day you get to wander round the
aircraft as well

What's the current situation with Wroughton? We've attended the Nostalgia
Show in August there since it started about 10 years ago, but last year it
was moved to South Cerney, largely because of the absolute fiasco in trying
to get all of the exhibits through a single exit on Sunday evening the year
before. The new event was still good, but it just wasn't the same. There
were rumours about possible redevelopment of the Wroughton site, but these
may be completely unfounded. Anyone know any more?
Cheers,
Bill.

I'll have a look next time I'm passing. No large car gatherings that I know of
now that the Nostalgia thing has moved. Gave that up as a bad job with rude
marshalls and staff and the nightmare of getting out. None of mine liked
sitting in traffic boiling merrily. Could have made tea from the hot water.
Can't see that South Cerney would be much better getting onto the A417.
Much prefer rallying in germany, France and Holland now. The Police even hold
traffic up when you want to get across crossroads. Did a great rally in France
last year. 4 nights accommodation, all the food and ALL drinks and visits to
places of interest Cost 40 Euros for 2 people !!! costs more than that for a 1
day road run in the rip off UK.
If anyones near Talmont St Hilaire in the Vendee check out their museum. Cars
from 1885 to 1970ish. And not a Rolls-Royce in sight. Other things for the
wife to look at.

Yes, I should have mentioned Wroughton. I camped there for one event
and bl**dy cold it was too! Of course if you're interested in buses and
trams there's the London Transport Museum in Covent Garden and its
depot at Acton (only open about three weekends a year), and the Tramway
Museum at Crich (long 'i') - train to Whatstandwell on the Matlock
branch.

Try asking these lot regarding Triumphs

The TSSC are lurking here, I'm a member, as is Bill Davies.
Details of Standard-Triumph day at Gaydon (30th May) are here

For the museum's site go here http://www.heritage-motor-centre.co.uk/
I think it's on the same day as the Triumph World picnic at Beale Park near
Reading

The Triumph World Picnic usually clashes with Beaulieu Autojumble and/or the
Duxford Triumph day, a nightmare from a Triumph Specialist's point of view!
The Gaydon event hasn't clashed with anything specifically Triumph in recent
years,

Bill.

There is one in Bettws-y-Coed (North Wales) close to the station, which
would also give you a very pretty rail trip.
