Off topic, but after my third circuit yesterday the instructor said I was
ready and he was getting out! Incredible feeling of being alone in the
circuit - the approach and landing was the most concentration I have ever
experienced!

Well done, Ray. May all your landings be soft ones.

Thank you - I am flying on Saturday for an hour doing circuits all alone.
If your near Elstree between 12 and 2pm, look up and give me a wave - I am
a learner though so don't distract me for too long!

I'm well away from Elstree (looks to the heavens, gives thanks.).

Well done! Hope you used your indicators correctly turning onto finals...

Only if there was other traffic visible, of course...

LOL!
Elstree is a strange place for traffic. Only Cabair and Firecrest are
allowed in the circuit. All other arriving traffic has to get onto finals 4
miles out and fly straight in (noise issues). Circuit traffic has to give
way to traffic on long finals, so at least half of my circuits end up in a
go around off base leg!
So, its listen out for traffic, try to spot them and make a decision on
whether to go around or cut in front!

I have approached a runway to land with two other aircraft at the same time.
Fixed wing to the runway, two helicopters in left and right circuits
alongside the runway. No problem if everyone knows what they are doing.

I used to fly gliders from an airfield in France which had gliding,
helicopter, power flying and parachuting going on simultaneously. It
taught look out very well. On one of my first flights there (I had ten
hours' solo time) I was the thirteenth glider in a row to land. That
gets interesting.

We glider pilots have to know that if a control tower shows you a
flashing red light they mean "Don't land here." Accepted response is
to land and give 'em a quick physics lesson...

Congratulations! I can still remember both of my first solos: Cave
Street - Iffley Road (Herald 13/60) and once round Rufforth Airfield
(Schleicher K7m) ...

I did 13 hours to solo.

You'll find that all pilots claim that "normal" is about an hour
longer than they took, just as hi-fi enthusiasts always define "hi-fi"
as starting at fifty quid less than they themselves paid...

I have no idea what is the "normal" time to Solo. Another chap at my school
went solo after 12 hours but others not until 15.

I suppose there is an average time, but it's meaningless. In gliding,
people who learn at winch launch sites tend to go solo earlier (in
hours) because they have lots of take off and landing practice, but
they then take ages to get the up air work abilities of aerotowed
learners. There are just too many variables of weather, site, personal
strengths/weaknesses and aircraft to take into account.
But once again, many congratulations. Life will never be
two-dimensional again!

During WW2 it was about 7 hours from first flight to frontline I understand.
But the pilots weren't expected to live very long.

Well i didnt mean it in a nasty sort of way Ray, I meant it as sometimes you
come across as focusing on the minor and sometiems trivial aspects and
forget the bigger picture. Sometimes.
