GATSOs without rulers

The A505 in Herts has had its GATSO cameras repositioned recently in
the Royston/Baldock area.  But not all the new camera positions have
rulers on the carriageway.  In fact the camera (now removed) that was
previously at the eastern end of the Baldock bypass never had a ruler
at all during its time there.

I presume the  'type approval' or whatever it is called for GATSOs
means that a speed camera without a ruler must be a dummy box,
correct?

FTAOD, no, I am not nervously awaiting a NIP.

Or a speed camera waiting for the lines to be painted.

Certainly around here, some cameras have waited a long time for the
painting crew to arrive after resurfacing.

It would be over 2 years for the (now moved) Baldock by-pass camera -
the road opened in March 2006.   It was surely a dummy, therefore.

There's one on the A4 eastbound approach to Hammersmith that's been
there for at least 3 months and still no lines.

IIRC a graticule can be superimposed on the photo optically.

Interesting.  Is that legal?

Some "GATSOs" without lines could be Truvelos

The cameras on that section of the A505 are all rear-facing GATSOs.

No, incorrect. It's acceptable to install a Gatso without road markings.
At the time of installation a reference photograph is taken using
temporary markings. Any subsequent determination of speed can then be
done using an overlay of the reference photograph onto the evidential
photograph. Since the cameras are fixed and have a fixed focal length
lens, there's no problem with scale or parallax using this technique.

Another possibility is that the camera is using loop detectors, not
microwave. These seem to be becoming more common and because the loop
positions are fixed, there's no need for road markings.

Similarly Truvelo and SPECS don't need road markings.
