My older sister is going to take her LGV test.
I think as she's now 50, she earns my respect for having a go.
How hard is it now to pass the test - she didn't pass her car test
first time. I guess the written part is fairly hard?
Anyway, she's passed the medical so that a good start.

Written part is the same as a car with a few HGV specific extras.
Driving test is different though. It's twice the duration of a car test
and before you even get out on the road, you have to do a reversing
test and a controlled stop. You can fail before you've even got out the
test centre. In addition to an uphill start, there's also a downhill
start as well as a gearchange exercise.
In addition to that though, before she can be employed, she will have
to sit and pass the Drivers CPC exam which is about 40hrs training plus
assessment and covers the basics of driving such as load security and
route planning etc although you don't need that to transport your own
horses in a horsebox for example.

Funny you mention horses Conor - that exactly what she has in mind.
Her husband, who already has an LGV has bought a new 5 horse carrying
horse box.
One advantage she does have, she's used to 7.5t horse boxes, so she'll
have a bit of experience to draw on. Not that I don’t think she’ll
find it demanding, I think she will.
From what she told me on sms, she's going to do 5 days training at 3
hours a day.
There absolutely no way she'd be able to work as a driver - she has
trouble finding her way across town let alone finding places to
deliver to.
I didn’t realize about the Drivers CPC, jeez the authorities are
making it hard these days aren’t they.

You say that like it's a bad thing...

I think it is a case of over regulation. Another layer of cost and
bureaucracy. Let’s get some more civil servants to organize it.
I suspect most of the Drivers CPC is common sense, or, so specific to
be no use in the real world.

Yeah...those who already had licences have an exemption until 2014
thankfully. It also needs to be renewed every 5 years as well.

That would be _your_ sister :-)
(hmm, given the rough ideas I've got about your age, that would be quite
specialised...)

Women that age become almost invisible.
