Pay-as-you-drive scheme could be alternative to car tax, say MPs

There already is a pay as you drive system - it's called fuel duty.
It costs you more if you drive more or drive a thirsty car.

There seems very little reason to maintain the current tax disk system at all.

Depends what you are trying to achieve (and the report has been pretty clear
that the government have been far from clear).

If it's reducing congestion, then pay as you drive would be the solution
(though hugely controversial and intrusive).
If it's raising revenue, and a green tinge according to CO2, then fuel duty
is a very easy way to do it, and (largely) unevadable.

If it's only about raising revenue (which seems to be the case), then you
apply as many different taxes/charges as possible, i.e. all of them at once.

The government wants to raise extra money

Just do the maths.

If you abolish car tax (no please don't correct me!) and fuel duty and then
charge per mile it comes out at a few pence per mils, for all miles.  This
is going to make bugger all difference to people's car usage AND is going to
remove the tax penalties for driving an uneconomic car.  And that's before
you pay for collecting the money. Doing this makes no sense, it's all about
extra revenue.

Except that to get one you have to show the car is insured!

If you buy a tax disk online they check the insurance online.

That's good enough for any plod, hobby-bobby, traffic warden etc. who
can all access the insurance database back at base via personal radio.
if you commit a moving traffic offence or any other such as RTG. or
just if they feel that way inclined.

So?
That doesn't prove that the vehicle & driver combination is insured at any time after that and the majority of "no insurance" offences are now found by ANPR or after the vehicle has already come to the police's attention and they have run a check.

An insurance disk and an MOT disk would be more useful for a police officer to do a quick visual check.

Would that include people who can't remember which thread they are
supposed to reply to?

I don't think there is much hope of catching up with you!

You are the biggest cretin I have ever met!

You're a dolt Holmes, a pointless wankstain on the blanket of life.

Now, haven't you got to focus your efforts on attempting to save face
and avoid a meeting?

Steve Firth, why do you feel the need to talk to someone in such a foul
and derogatory manner?

In Holmes case because he's both an idiot and a troll, wasting the time
and patience of people who are genuinely decent. In your case because
you're a drooling waste of oxygen.

So,wishing me a slow and painful death(as you've already said), is being
decent,is it?

Indeed it is, the world would be better for it.

You seem to think that a bleating fuckwit like yourself is owed
something. As far as I'm concerned you're somethng to scrape off a shoe.
I don't know how clear I have to make it to you before you understand.

Bod, Steve is doing you a favour by teaching you the art of how to be
insulting.  Try it sometime, it's great fun.  I make a point of insulting
at least two people a day.

Now go and thank Steve for the free tuition he's gone to the trouble of
giving you.  Some people are so ungrateful!

"A report by MPs has suggested that drivers could be taxed by the miles they
travel and urges MPs to reconsider the controversial idea after it was
scrapped two years ago following a public outcry."

Are they trying to claim that drivers are not already taxed - handsomely - by
the miles they travel?

They almost certainly are.  The vehicle licence fee is just an extra tax on
mileage-related tax.

I read somewhere on one of the news websites that MPs reckoned £1.95 per
km on congested roads was a fair price.

As I tend to mainly drive for the commute, and do it mainly on the M56
during rush hour, which is always busy, I'm looking at £750+ per week to
get to work, or £3000 a month, or roughly 2-3 times what I earn after
tax.
