The next time someone cuts you off on your morning commute, don't be so
quick to call the driver a jerk; you may have a reason to say thanks.
According to the latest physics research, rule-breakersdrivers passing
you on the wrong side or changing lanes too close to the
intersectionactually help smooth the flow of traffic for the rest of
us.

"The interesting finding is that if most of the people are law-abiding,
and you have a certain amount of people who are breaking the rule, then
you are actually getting the minimum chance of a [traffic] jam," said
Petter Minnhagen, a physicist at Sweden's Umea University and an author
of the paper published in the journal Physical Review E.

Frustration casues accidents: allow faster traffic to overtake.

No shock there. It only takes one dumbfuck playing policeman and sitting
at 70mph in the middle or outside lane to screw up most motorways or dual
carraigeways because 99% of drivers are too scared to pass on the inside.
If more people did the traffic would flow much better.

And it would flow better still if the DF wasn't hogging the middle lane in
the first place.

It's an interesting finding of the study, because I'd have thought that if
all traffic got into the right lane sufficiently early, rather than cutting
in at the last minute, the traffic would flow better because there was no
last-minute braking to let people in.

When the M40 was reduced from three lanes to one lane near Warwick for a new
bridge to be slid across into place a few weeks ago, there were horrendous
stop/start queues because some people were ignoring the "lanes 2 and 3
closed X yards ahead" signs and cutting in. Average speed was about 10 mph.
But once those lanes were coned off and everyone was confined to one lane,
the traffic immediately speeded up to about 40-50 (speed limit was 50).

There was one idiot sitting in the outside lane of the north-east corner of
the M25 one morning in the middle of the rush hour. Once I went through on
his nearside quite a few others discovered that the world did not come to an
end and followed.

It is something I do regularly as the dunbfucks on the M9 & M8 all sit in
the outside lane doing 55-60 while I cruise down the inside lane at 70. The
problem arises when you arive at the back end of the lorry they are all
trying to pass at 1mph faster than the lorry itself. 10% of them allow you
to filter out but most close up the gap saying I got here first and f.ck you
jimmy you are not getting out in fornt of me.

These types are liberally sprinkled all over the M25. Sometimes in moments
of paranoia brought on by the sheer frustration of the situation I've wondered
if they're hired by the DOT to keep the average speeds down.

Around heathrow the motorway is 6 lanes wide IN EACH DIRECTION , yet still
these f.ckers all have congregate towards the outside lane so you effectively
get a moving roadblock of traffic doing about 65. It just beggars belief.
