Driving home tonight and the first 20 miles everytuing is normal, then
leaving a 50mph limit put my foot down and the acceleration is flat, same
thing out of a 40mph limit and it stayed flat until I got home. Even in 3rd
gear with foot to the floor the acceleration was flat and it didn't seem to
want to get above 2,000rpm. No warning lights, or odd noises.
Left it for 30 minutes then took it out for a run and the acceleration is
back to normal.
Is this indicative of something failing? Any ideas what might have caused
this?
Car is Golf MKIII TDI 90bhp, P plate, 125,000miles, FSH.
Thanks for any advice.

Sounds like the Mass Air Flow sensor.
Had a similar thing happen to me, replaced it, and things were *almost* back
to normal.
Never got the same 'turbo kick' back that I used to have :-(

Similar problem on a Passat tdi turned out to be air thrust sensor about the
size of a temperature sensor fitted into the inlet ducting before the MAF

It does sound like a MAF fault or the connection to it failing, but
could be other things too. Check the MAF connection (on the air inlet
trunking), and all the vacuum hoses you can find, especially from the
control valves on the bulkhead, and around the turbo wastegate.
Do you know anyone with VAG-COM or another diag tool to read any fault
codes?
Interestingly I had an Ibiza with the same TDI90 engine that did exactly
the same when about 6 months old, and never did it again :-/

I don't know much, but if it were me I'd take the battery leads off
overnight and let the computer reset itself, as it might have got confused.
Then I'd hope that it didn't happen again :) - but you're sure to get
some better informed advice than that.
All the best,

Thanks to everyone for you advice and comments.
It's behaved itself for the last two days so I'm going to leave it and see
if it what happens.
Cheers
