I have an old VW Golf 1.8 8v (1990) with about 110, 000 miles.  The car
runs great but the motor has a terrible tick.  I've tried oil
additives.... they only work for about a week, if that.  I know the car
sat for a long time before I bought it (hence the low miles).

Can anyone help me???????

Marvel Mystery Oil perhaps?

You can add it to the fuel and/or oil.  You have a valve tap I think.
Read the directions and do what it says.  Thinking while I type adding
it to a car with a catalytic converter may not be the best idea, but
the oil should help for sure.  You can use it over an extended period
so it can clean out whatever is causing the tap slowly.

HTH.

Replace the hydraulic tappets. It's not too hard or expensive,
especially if it needs a cambelt change at the same time.

Agreed - I did that on my 104,000 8v.

For me it was a 120,000 mile 1.6 Driver. The only work above a cambelt
change is to take off the cam cover, unbolt the cam bearings, lift off
the cam, pull out the tappets, drop in the new ones, and put it back
together. ISTR that you have to leave the engine unstarted for a while
to let the tappets settle, but it's been a while.

They should settle within a few miles though, anything beyond and the
tappets are shot.

However do check one other thing, my 8v tappet noise was greatly
enhanced when the exhaust manifold cracked...

True. A blowing manifold can sound *exactly* like tappets.

One or more tappets. One of mine sticks if the car's not been run for a few
weeks. You can swap them, or you can try some ATF dropped in the oil then
changed a few days later, and apparently pulling them out and putting them
in ATF can help. If you've got lots of time, you can even dismantle and
clean them. Someone's put up a little guide on clubgti.com/forum.
