If it *does* seem to be playing up (has it's behaviour changed? I'd not
be surprised with one not going into top until 38mph), then the first
step is to get any fault codes read.
Remember that VW autoboxes learn your driving, so if you've been
hammering it lately, it might have altered it's shift pattern.

Chris, remember that as the cars mileage increases it takes an
increasing number of drive cycles for the VW box to re-learn a
particular driving style so if the driving style has only recently
changed, it is unlikely to be due to this.

When did these 'Intelligent Systems' begin? Does my Mk2 Golf auto1990 have
this 'neural network'?

No, AFAIK, the 'box in the MkII is the same 3 speed slush-box as found
in my old MkI cabrio.
