Fitting a bypass valve on MK2 Golf 1.6 Driver - advice

hi,

I have a MK2 Golf 1991 1.6 Driver

A few months ago I poisted a topic here about the heater bypass valve,
and have now bought one

Cos it was fitted as part of a recall there's no mention of it in the
Haynes manual etc.

As far as I can see its just a few jubilee clips that need to be
undone, the old one pulled out and the new one pushed in.  I cannot see
that I will need to replace any seals etc.  Nothing other than the
valve (2 parts , one metal, one plastic with the small rubber hose
already fitted), and a couple of jubilee clips came in the bag.

I have the entire part with some spare clips from GSF.  But what I want
to know is whether the cooling system needs to be drained or not.

As the valve is near the top of the engine, will I still need to drain
the coolant.  I am thinking that there will not be a gush off coolant
when I start undoing anything - is this right.

I have replace the waxstat in the past and I was able to do this
without draining.

With regards to draining, if I need to I guess that wil just involve
undoing the hose at the bottom of the rad?.

Finally I have a golf Gti Mk2 1991 (PB code).  There is no bypass
valve.  Should I do anything about this?  At the moment I have all
sorts of problems with the cooling system on this car (possible rad
leaks and no hot air)

Thanks

Bhupesh

I wouldn't drain the system. You might lose a bit of coolant, but not
much. Just top it up and bleed it afterwards.

Hi Chris,

I have bled hom rads before - please explain how I would do this in a
car.  Which hose to bleed from etc.  do you keep the car running?

Thanks for the quick reply,

Leave the header tank cap off, start the car up and let it run up to
temp, you need to be patient until the car hits arount the middle of the
temp guage at which point the thermostat should open allowing full flow
of water around the engine, be ready to top up the header tank as
depending on how much water you've lost it could suddenly need a decent
top up. Leave running a few more mins, keep fingers etc away from the
fan, I'd say once they've kicked in and turned off, knock the engine
off, ensure water between min and max, replace cap. Check levels
following day.

Some cars have a bleed nut on top of the engine, but I don't think any
of the mk2 lumps have this.

Concerning the Mk II without the valve, ask at your VW dealer if your car
should have the valve fitted under the recall, you might get it done for
free!!
