Passat Cutting Out

I have a 2002 2.0L petrol passat which suddenly cut out on me whilst
driving home today. Fortunately I managed to pull over to the side of
the road but after that every time I tried to start the engine it would
run ok for about 1 or 2 seconds and then cut out again. When the RAC
eventually arrived they couldn't figure out what was wrong. No fault
codes were showing up and no problems with the fuel supply were evident.
Thus, I had to be towed home. The really annoying thing is that I only
had it serviced yesterday with a VW dealer which included a cambelt
change. I don't know whether this is related or just a coincidence since
the 10 mile drive home after the service was just fine. Any ideas what
could be wrong before I contact the dealer first thing on Monday?

That sounds like it could be an immobiliser fault. Could be the key or
the pickup coil for in near the ignition switch.

That's exactly what you get if you try to start the car with a key not
coded to the immobilzer: It will fire, run, then die.

If the key is not recognised the car will not start at all. It will beep at
you and flash the immobilser light. Also the immobaliser functionality
should be disabled when the engine is running to prevent the car cutting out
mid journey.

Your problem almost sounds like a blocked exhaust pipe. Get someone to check
the exhaust for the brief period it does run. May be the cat has broken up
inside. But I would have thought the AA man would have spotted that.

Might be different on the Passat, but with our Lupo, I have a key which
is physically cut but the transponder chip isn't coded (long story...).
With this key the car will start and run for about 1 second. Not long
enough to drive away though, so there isn't a safety issue. Put one of
the coded keys in and it starts and runs as normal.

Blocked cat is possible though, as might be a dodgy fuel pump or relay.
If the pump primes as normal when the ignition is switched on, but
doesn't then run as it should once the engine fires, the loss of fuel
will stop the engine.

In the end it turned out to be a problem with a vacuum hose that had
become detached.
