Golf Mk4 (TDi 100BHP) Rattling Noise

Hi,

I have a Mk4 Golf (2003) TDi 100BHP - 40k on the clock, which seems to
be making a rattling noise (the kind of rattling noise when your in a
higher gear and your trying to drive).

The noise comes when moving off (and is worse when climbing a steep
hill) - It only lasts 2-3 seconds.

There is no performance impact or clutching problems - that I can tell
from.

Is this a common problem? and has anyone else experienced any similar
kinds of problems?

I think it's the weather at the moment combined with 'winter' diesel -
'cos my 2005 Passat TDI 140 is currently doing the same.
