I have a 96 Golf TDi GL wth the "twin" style headlamps? The headlamps
are a bit dull and I think some brighter bulbs might help.

Does anyone know what sort I need to buy and how many? It would seem
like the normal none-twin Golf ones are different to the twin type?
Were there just these two types? Are the headlamps I have the same as
the ones fitted to the GTi/VR6 models?

I used to have a vr6 see it at www.propertadverts.co.uk if you have the
same type then these were VW extras but I think the bulbs should be the
same for both types, best thing to do is remove the bulbs from the one
side and mark down the numbers on the bulbs they should be scribed into
the metal part of the bulb, then do a net search for that model or give
this company a call they are in Rmosy up the road from me and they do
some nice bright replacement bulbs

If you go to Halfords they have charts for this near the bulbs. They also have
a range of extra bright bulbs.

The headlights specced in the duals for Golf 3 are H1.
Osram make an excellent high output version branded "Silverstar".
The part number is 64150SVS.
They should cost around 10 quid.
