Hi there ...
My mother's just taken her VW Polo (M reg, low miles - about 35,000 I
think, does about 3,000 a year, reg serviced etc) to the garage.
Having been told it's unroadworthy and needs a new camshaft, she's been
quoted "somewhere between £200 and £500" to fix.
This garage has always struck me as a little dodgy, but she won't budge
or get a second opinion.
The car's been driving ok otherwise, recently MoT'd, serviced etc ...
how much should she expect to pay for this?
Many thanks for your help in advance!

Not sure where the £500 figure would come from, but it does sound suspicious -
is it a VW dealership?
A worn cam could affect the vehicle emissions, which might fail an MoT, so there
might be some truth in calling it unroadworthy, but I would expect it to be down
on power too. As it's passed the MoT recently, this doesn't sound very likely.
Does it make tapping sounds while idling? If it idles evenly and quietly, it's
not got a problem with the camshaft.
Do get a second opinion - is she an RAC or AA member? They might help out
without having to do a full inspection if there's a chance a member is being
'ripped-off'.

Seconded. If it is running and idling well and isn't clattering, and
passes an emissions check, there isn't a camshaft problem. Get a second
opinion.

Is it a PD diesel engined Polo at all?? Not sure how new these diesel Polo's
are, but if the wrong oil is used then the camshaft could well fail
prematurely, I'd think it would be accompanied by a load clattering and if
this is the case I'd be right back to the people who do the serviceing as it
would be down to them to sort out due to them useing the wrong oil!!
Definitly get a second opinion!!!

Thanks for the advice!
I will push her into getting a second opinion on it, I don't think it's
been too bad, and passed emmissions test about 2 months ago.
Thanks a lot!
