Sounds like the starter isn't engaging with the flywheel properly. Try
cleaning everything up.
No idea on the second problem, I hate carbs with a passion. MK2 GTIs are
cheap you know :).

Hang on a second. Has it still got the automatic choke? These are generally
pretty problematic. And most garages don't understand the Pierburg card
because it's not a Weber...

check the distributor too...

yeah its got an automatic choke
When you try starting, do you mean the engine doesn't turn, or just doesn't
start running?
My favourite answer for a Mk 2 Golf with carb that gets a massive loss of power
and eventually cuts out after running fine is that the waterway that feeds the
automatic choke with warm water once the electrical heater turns off (a few
minutes after starting) is blocked. Look at
www.hallvw.clara.co.uk/jettachoke.htm
for how to check if this is the problem.
I had another problem with my Mk 2 Jetta - the distributor cap was burned away
under one of the plug connectors, but was hidden by the rubber. If you have an
electrical testmeter, check the resistance of your plug leads - from inside the
distributor cap to inside the plug cap. Look for 5KOhms or around that. If
it's a lot higher, replace it. You may be able to work out if it's the plug cap
rather than the other end - can be changed separately.
Have you looked at the spark plugs - the colour and state of them tells you a
lot about the state of your engine, fuel and ignition systems.
As well as the choke water circulation problem, it sounds as if you have a fault
in part of the ignition system which is why you get more trouble in damp
weather.

yeap the engine dosent turn, just makes a load noise (bit like a donky
mateing with a cow)
i've also got another problem but i thought it was unrelated and that
is the the stero and cigaret lighter dosent work, i've replace the fuse
but this made no difference could that be related to anything?
i'll check my spark plugs and see what condiion there in and give the
everything a good cleen.

A quid says it's the Bendix on the starter.

whats on off them?

It's the mechanism to engage the gear on the starter motor - it winds the cog
along.
Just remove the starter motor, spray some WD40 onto the bits sticking out, make
sure the cog mechanism can move freely along the shaft, and stick it back in.
Check the shaft isn't wobbling about and fouling the casing. If the front
bearing on the starter motor has collapsed, it might be that the actual armature
(main bit in the motor that rotates) is fouling the casing and field coils.
That makes a nasty noise alright - don't know if it's the same as a donkey
mating with a cow. You need to remove the starter to see if that's the problem
anyway.
I don't think the cigarette lighter failure would be affecting starting -
assuming there isn't a major power short, which you would notice as smoke and
crackling noises!

Thanks, i'll take a look at the starter moter at the weakend.
back to the stero/lighter i've removed the stero and the connectors
have been hashed together with duc tape, could this be a lickley cause
of a short in the cicuit or is there anywhere else i can check?

Its the cog on the end of the starter motor that engages with the ring gear
around the flywheel that spins the engine to start it. If the cog or ring
gear (hopefully NOT the ring gear!) gets damaged a god awful noise can be
heard and usually means the starter will have to be removed and the 'bendix'
cog changed. It *could* just be that the starter motor has worked loose from
the bellhousing and just needs tightening but if it's allowed to go on too
much more damage will be caused, so get it sorted pronto!
